Professor Haruki turns to look at the class. Kurai sitting in the front taking notes in his book.
"As we conclude today's lesson on Angles, Arithmetic, and Arches of a Moving Object, let's revisit the key points with some numbers and equations to rejuvenate your memory, rejog it a bit" her hair was a messy brown, very unkempt, wearing the college's unique uniform of a long button up coat she prefers to keep unbuttoned. Wearing her large circular glasses and green eyes underneath.
"Let's review Angles first… We've learned that a full rotation is 360° or 2π radians." She draws a circle on the chalkboard.
"For instance, an angle of 45° is an example of an acute angle, and 90° is a right angle." she divides the circle into degrees and angles from the center of the circle.
"Then we'll take it a step further, let's say we add two together, we'd get a bigger angle… For example, if we add a 30° and 60° angle, we get 90°, which is a right angle. So if this angle is a floor and wall, then we have a 4th, a 25% of a circle connecting the floor and wall… which we can take into consideration in the real world with… let's say basketball" she draws a very bad basketball hoop and stick figure. Kurai sitting at his desk calculating setting angles for volleyball in his journal.
"Then we can say, the boy standing on the floor needs to throw the ball at this angle, and this arm strength, to get this curve to be able to hit the backboard… the same principle can be evaluated if he wants to make it in the hoop. Toss the ball at a more vertical angle… sorry… rephrase…" she pauses as Kurai looks up.
"The maximum height, or 'h' of a projectile launched at an initial velocity or 'v' and angle 'θ' can be calculated using the formula: $$h = \frac{v^2 \sin^2(θ)}{2g}$$ where 'g' is the acceleration due to gravity… For example, a ball thrown with an initial speed of 20 m/s at an angle of 45° will reach a maximum height of approximately 10.2 meters… assuming 'g = 9.8 m/s²'... which can be applied to basketball, basically, if the correct calculations are made, you can always make it in the basket no matter where you are on the court" some students moaned and groaned in confusion. Kurai wrote all this down.
"Remember, practice is key in mathematics. Try to solve different problems using these formulas and concepts… That's all for today. Have a good day, everyone. Stay safe, and keep practicing… I'll be in my office if you have any questions… you're dismissed" everyone stands up and prepares to leave. Kurai standing up and putting his notebook away. Walking over to Prof. Haruki.
"Oh, if it isn't my most diligent student… Kurai Vlast… What do you need, buddy? You don't seem to be struggling with the content we're learning, so what's up?" Kurai puts his bag on his back, towering over Prof. Haruki with a height of 6 foot 11.
"When I first heard about OPU during my senior year, I came here because the school isn't that big… not that I mind… but also because it was a pentecostal University with a boys volleyball team… but I haven't been able to find it quite yet… any idea where it might be?" Prof Haruki sighs.
"Forgot you used to be a volleyball powerhouse during High School, Kurai… but I hate to be the bearer of bad news… The team isn't what it used to be… There are barely any players left, and we don't even have a coach anymore… It's basically become a free time, do-whatever-you-want club." Kurai is slightly shocked.
"Really? That's disappointing…" Prof Haruki exhales deeply while packing up her things.
"Yes, it is… You know, when I was a student here, I used to watch the volleyball team. They were a powerhouse team at one point… But after the coach retired, it just... fell into disrepair." Kurai looks around at the emptying classroom, repositioning his backpack on his back again.
"That's a shame. Volleyball is such a great sport. It deserves better." she nods as she walks over to the door.
"I couldn't agree more, Kurai. It's a game of strategy, teamwork, and skill. It's a pity to see it neglected like this." Kurai clenches his fist as they stop in the hallway.
"Well, maybe it's time someone did something about it." Prof Haruki smirks.
"Oh? And what might that be?" Kurai glares up. His eyes glowing an ominous blue. The last timeProf Haruki saw this glint was during her High School days.
"I think I'll go meet this team. Maybe there's something I can do to help." Prof Haruki smiles.
"That's a wonderful attitude, Kurai. Best of luck, and remember, every great journey begins with a single step." Kurai bows in respect slightly before turning around.
"Thank you, Professor Haruki. I'll keep that in mind." Kurai walks away.
