….
Now that the shopkeeper had fainted, Elle stared at the red eyed man in startle. Not only had this man helped her by standing up against the shop keeper who had almost beaten her face, he had also broke his arms and made the man faint without seemingly being worried or guilty. He then turned his gaze toward her, as if noticing that her gaze had been burning straight to his side profile.
She flinched and looked away, her golden eyes frantically looking all over the place as if fearing that when their gaze met again there would be more fire burning between her and him.
"You tend to attract danger, don't you?" Magnus inquired, his lips holding a faint trace of smile that brought her gaze to look at his face. She had sworn to look away, feeling as if there was a horrible magnetic force that pull her to admire his face whenever her gaze landed close toward his face.
It wasn't only that she felt shy seeing his face over and over again only to then being caught by him as if she was a thief; but also when she look at his face, she felt herself lost and that feeling was so foreign that she decided to avoid feeling it completely.
"I don't attract danger," she whispered, "I think," she then added with a frown as she recalled indeed how her entire life she had always attract danger. How would this man know, either way? She found him looking at her when she craned her neck, realizing their height difference that made her suddenly feel small, "Thank you, kind sir, for helping me and my little brother."
"No worries," he said with a smile, accepting the thank you with a big smile as if he liked the gratitude shown by the human. "I think I did a pretty well job in teaching this little pig his place but I would recommend you not to come to this market again if you do not want him to hunt after you."
Estelle looked at the man who had fainted and how others around her quickly hide behind their vendor as if fearing that they would be the next one to be attacked.
"I think so," she sighed, "And I thought I could finally buy things peacefully…"
"Is it often for you to be treated this way?" Magnus asked with a smile. She noticed one thing. Although this man had helped her, he didn't seem to do it out of a pure intention. It wasn't that he felt "bad" for her that he decided to lend his help. It was as if… he had helped her simply because the fight she had with the housekeeper seemed "fun" to him.
"It's because I came from the slums," she wondered if the vampire would understand the segregation she had suffered for being a slum resident. Upon looking at his blank eyes, he didn't appear to understand as she had expected.
"So the slums suffered this kind of discrimination. Humans are really funny," he chuckled faintly, placing his finger underneath his well shaped lips. "Despite being as weak as each other, you will discriminate one another from where they came. Really no matter how many centuries that had passed, humans will remain humans."
Elle's eyes blankly stared at his red ones as she had heard what he had said perfectly. He seemed to have noticed she heard it and grinned. "What's wrong?"
"Pardon me for saying this even though you have helped me," she started, "But I think being a human doesn't have anything to do with discriminations. I also heard how there are caste between vampires and how you also discriminate each other from which family you came from."
"Oh," Magnus chuckled. "I'm sorry about my remark. I didn't mean to offend you as a human for the discrimination. I also agree that even vampires discriminate against each other. I just recalled a memory that was similar to this which happened long ago regarding a human who was casted away by their own people for being just a little different than them."
Elle didn't know what to say as she could see in the vampire's red eyes that for a moment his gaze turn chilling, even more frightening than the time he had threatened the shop keeper. Does this mean he had helped her because he had seen unfairness between humans before and felt bitter?
"That must have been terrible. What happened to that human?" Elle found it a little strange calling 'human' as a species as she is also one of the humans.
"Crucified," replied Magnus. Noticing the shock that Elle felt with her big golden eyes turning as wide as a sauce, the handsome vampire chuckled. "You don't know anything about the saints?"
"The saint?" She tilted her head before nodding her head, "I know that the church worship the saint. That they are the savior of this world, they were also the only person who could go against the Darkling when he created those Vargo monsters."
"Hm so you know the basic story about the saints, but you don't know about it too deeply," Magnus looked at her eyes that had sparkled with interest, "You want to hear about it?"
"I would but," Elle trailed with a frown as she looked down to Lucas who had hold her hand tighter while glaring at Magnus. "I have to go now…"
"I understand that, no worries," Magnus's red eyes stared back at Lucas who felt shivers running down his spine before he hide his entire body behind Elle's legs. Not taking offense of the young boy who immediately run upon meeting eyes, he seemed to be smiling as if praising the boy's good instinct to flee upon seeing him as he wasn't the kind of people kids should be interested in. He then looked at Elle again and spoke with a tone of mirth, "Next time, I recommend that you would walk away from such shops with a rude owner. I understand the unfairness of being discriminated against but if you keep doing that you will one day court your own death."
Elle didn't feel as if she was being scolded, agreeing to his words as she had behaved a bit reckless back then with the shopkeeper who she also noticed to be quite the hot headed type. "I will keep that in mind. Thank you again for helping me." She didn't peg him to be the type of helping people, after all.
"I don't think you will note that in your mind, honestly," Magnus said with a grin. "You seem to be the type who will run first before thinking."
Elle frowned, "I do think but sometimes one cannot help when their emotions take control of them."
"Mhm true, but you can't always hope for a kind gentleman like I to help you, so be more aware of the dangers surrounding you," Magnus pressed his words. He wasn't one to warn people but seeing Elle had recklessly fan the fire on the shopkeeper earlier had made him very uncomfortable.
She quickly adorned her lips with a big fake smile. Although it look extremely pleasant from years of practice, her heart said otherwise.
"You are of course very correct. It is very rare to find such a very very kind gentleman with a big heart like yours. Thank you again kind gentleman," Elle said while bowing her head. "I will reply you one day."
Magnus could see through her fake smile. Instead of feeling offended, his chuckle became a laughter and he quirked his left lips higher, "One day, I'll remember that then."
Just then, Elle heard a group of men running toward Magnus, all dressed in black. Her heart dropped upon realizing that those were the uniform of the churchmen!
Damn it! Did they realize who she is!?
Elle quickly pulled her pink hair to cover her face, but surprisingly, the churchmen walked pass by her, stopping near Magnus while breathing heavily, "L- Lord Magnus! W- We heard that you wanted to visit us?"
Elle who heard the vampire's name had her two eyes widened enough that it could almost fall from the sockets. She stared at Magnus… this vampire— is the same vampire who she had met from that carriage?!
Magnus who didn't seem to notice her switch in expression crossed his arms and replied to the churchmen with eyes hinted with wicked intention, "Yes I did, I waited for perhaps one and half hour for someone to come and greet me in your office but no one seemed to like my presence or care for it," Magnus sounded like he was complaining but instead his smile held a mirth. Elle didn't know why but it seemed like she was the only one who could see this side of the vampire.
"My deepest apologies! Our deepest apologies!" Yelled the churchman, starting to sweat profusely and Elle could even see his hands slightly trembling. "We weren't alerted that it was you, my lord. If we knew, we would have—"
"So how will you compensate me?" Magnus inquired instead, cutting between their words while they gulped as they heard the only scene that could gladden the cursed lord's mood was bloodbath.
Even though Elle wasn't the one who had made the mistake, she felt somewhat uncomfortable upon seeing Magnus' slight frown. Suddenly he let out a small chuckle and patted the man's shoulder, "Calm down, I'm not upset don't worry. You all look very stressed out and I can't help but to tease further."
Even though he could have eased the men's worries, instead he took part in it... Eve thought he was a...
"Sadist," murmured Lucas, completing the words that lingered in her head and when Magnus turned his head, Elle had disappeared.
He raised his eyebrows and somehow felt a bit annoyed that he clicked his tongue, "Seems like that cat is very good at running away. This is the second time…"
