Chapter 27: An Unexpected Proposition

It’s been a week since the full moon. Steve has been out of town for pretty much the whole time, and Melanie was gone for four days. Things with her and Freddy are still tense, but it doesn’t seem like she’s carrying any more aggression against him. They’ll never sleep together, but I don’t feel the same antagonism anymore.

Things are settled down, really. Or they were, until about five minutes ago.

My hackles raised almost before the knock came at the door. There was just something about the knock, about the presence behind it. I almost knew who it would be before I answered the door. In fact, I think I DID know, and that’s why I answered it instead of letting someone else greet him.

“Jonathan,” I say, not inviting him into the house.

He looks around like he thinks the house is dirty or disease- ridden, and he wouldn’t be caught dead in here even if I do invite him in.
