Chapter 9: Everything Changes, but Everything Stays the Same

Recovery took forever when you didn't have the superhuman healing abilities of a shifter. Melani's tender ministrations and awful brew made me stronger every day. My face finally stopped looking like a retro television monster, and I could use a straw again without agonizing pain.

Two full weeks had passed since the incident, and Cane was still angry I hadn't told him who'd done this to me. Part of me wondered if I was a fool. If he stepped in, I wouldn't need to worry about her again. But, if I let him, I appeared weak.

I never wanted to be weak again. Now if only I could do something about this puny human(ish) body of mine. Using my magic would lead the coven right to me, and it wouldn't help me heal too much faster. The largest part of my magic came with caveats. Big ones.
