Chapter 24: Home is Where the Wolves Are

Cane didn't say a word as he walked me back home. I tried to initiate a conversation more than once but barely got a grunt back in response. After the third unanswered question, I gave up, following behind him and watching his stiff shoulders as he led the way.

Everything was fine until I mentioned the thread, so it had to be what triggered him. But why?

Cane's boots thumped onto the steps of my porch. He waited for me to unlock the door and came inside, methodically checking each room before returning to me.

"Everything looks good."

Was it just me, or did his voice sound a little more growly than usual?

"Thank you."

I didn't expect him to come in, but knowing he'd checked everything out made me feel safe. Evan normally did it for me, but now that Rory was on my tail, he checked everything out a lot more thoroughly these days. I didn't think she was dumb enough to hide in a closet awaiting me or anything, but Evan didn't seem to agree.
