Chapter 5

RUBIE'S P.O.V.

"Bri, I like her. She's cute, and she's perfect for you" he smiles and walks to the kitchen, "Yeah, I know, that's why I'm with her"...

"So what's in the house to eat? I'm starving," I ask, poking my head under his shoulder to look into the fridge. If you didn't already know, Ryan is taller than me.

He pushes my head back and closes the fridge.

"We have leftover chocolate cake in the microwave and tea or juice, whatever," he says, waving his hand around dramatically.

"Ooooh, chocolate, nice," I say, opening the fridge and taking out a jug of juice and the cake for the microwave. Then I saw Ryan walking into his room, and a few minutes later, he came out wearing a polo and pants.

"Where are you going?" I ask

"To the restaurant. Mom and Dad will need me."

"Dad...?, He's home?"

"Yes, he has no work today."

"Nice... Wait to tell them I'm around. Remember, you owe me."

"Yeah, whatever" That's the last I hear before the door closes.

After eating, I decided to sort out the clothes I'll wear at home. When that was settled, I decided to surprise my parents by cooking.

I go to the kitchen and find pasta and some ingredients for making it. So I'm now making pasta, meatballs, pepper sauce, and coleslaw; I tie my apron and get to work. After frying my meatballs, I make the pepper sauce, add all the ingredients, and wait for it to boil; after it boils together, I add the meatballs to the sauce. I finally add the pasta to the sauce and wait for it to cook.

After cooking, I look at the time, and it's 5pm. The restaurant closes by 7pm, so they'll arrive at 7:15pm. I take a long, hot dip in the bathtub for one hour; after settling myself in my room and browsing through Netflix, I finally choose an anime jujutsu kailan 1; with my headset on, I dive into it. One season later, I check the time, and it's 7:30pm; I finally take my headset off and start hearing noises; I go outside my room and walk downstairs, where I see Ryan holding my parent's coats; I whisper where are they? He points upstairs, and I walk to the kitchen and warm up the food; I set the table and dish it out. "Ryan, why is your sister's room door open," my mom says, coming down wearing her pajamas with a towel wrapped around her head; she doesn't see me and walks straight to the kitchen.

"Mom, I didn't leave it open. I don't know what happened," he says, following her.

"So, what do we eat for dinner?" She says, looking at him

"I don't know," he says, shrugging

They keep talking when Dad comes down and walks straight to the sitting room and sees me sitting on the couch and sitting on the next chair, then he stares again with wide eyes.

"Rubie?"

"Yes, Dad"

"When did you get back," he asks, walking to me and hugging me

"Just today, Dad."

"HONEY, COME HERE. RUBIE IS HERE!!!!" he shouts to my mom, and she comes out and stares at me. Then, suddenly, she is running and hugging me. It takes another 5-10 minutes before she lets me go.

"When did you get here, and why didn't you tell anybody? You don't even know this place; you've never been here. What if you got lost" she scolded me with a worried face.

"I didn't get lost. You sent me the address remember?" I say smiling

"Still, don't pull that stunt on us again."

"I wanted to surprise you guys, and besides, Ryan knew," I say, and Ryan becomes alarmed and jumps to his defense before Mom scolds him.

"I only knew when she suddenly popped into my room while I say studying," he says, leaving out the part where I saw him with a girl and pretending to be his girlfriend. I roll my eyes and turn to my mom, pulling her to the dining room.

"You don't have to cook; I've cooked already. Just sit and eat," I say to them.

"Wow, can't remember when last I ate pasta, "Dad says quickly, taking a seat.

"You had pasta last week," Mom says, rolling her eyes.

"So... I've been eating your food since I want to finally eat my Rubie's food. Besides, this one is cooked specially for us. We normally eat food that remains from the restaurant," he finishes and starts dishing it out. Mom shakes her head as we start eating; I tell them my experiences at school, how I got sick and was put on the ground floor to avoid climbing stairs and how I didn't have friends, about my job at Starbucks, and how I encountered Brad and Jessie and my mom hisses saying she can't believe they thought we'll be friends again.

When I'm done with all my tales, we're almost done with all the pot of food brought out. "ah, thank you, Rubie, the food was incredible," Dad says, smiling, and I laugh, clearing the plates to wash them. After washing them, I sit in the living room with everyone and tell them how I'm supposed to leave by Friday; Mom isn't happy about it. She kept on asking, "Can't you postpone it?"

"I don't think so, Mom," I say to her for the fifth time now

"Leave her. Let her go. She can't miss it, and you know that," Dad says, trying to persuade her

"Okay then, we'll have to make do with the few days we have," she says to me

"Yes, Mom, I want to do a lot of sightseeing here, "I tell her

After the talk about my internship and how my mom was praying that I could cope well there because of the language barrier and how I told her that my interviewer spoke English fluently, telling her that she shouldn't worry about me, I finally convinced her that I should go that Friday and everyone goes to bed....well except me. I will watch movies and read about the company I'll be going to very soon. After a while, I fall asleep.
