I walk a little further and see someone holding a sign that says 'Rubina Jackson' I sigh feeling so happy my ride is here and I won't be here any longer, thank God I wasn't wearing heels. I ran towards the person telling the person who I was and like that, I followed him to the car and we were off.
I felt so sleepy but didn't dare sleep cause (1) the streets were so pretty and I just needed to take pictures of myself and the entire environment cause Mom and Brooke would demand pictures and (2) I was in a foreign country and a strange man is driving me to wherever so I have to be alert, I've learnt a lot from dramas especially 'Vincenzo' that you shouldn't trust weird drivers or drink water in a strange car.
The silence-filled car came to a halt, it was silent cause the driver didn't say a word to me and I was listening to 'Silence' by Marshmallow and Khalid on my mini speaker, get it, no?, Just forget it!!
The grumpy driver finally says something "We hear Miss"
"Oh, thank you. Have a great day Sir" I say smiling at the man, and the grumpy man turns to me with a wide smile
"Thank you, have a great day to miss," he says as I get out of the car
Weird man, guess he was having a bad day I just needed something to smile about.
I walk through the doors and see a receptionist and I'm in a dilemma of whether I should speak English to her or just use my Google translator, cause if I speak to her in English and she doesn't understand it'll be weird, but if I use my translator I'll look stupid and racist thinking she can't speak English. I decide to drop the overthinking and just walk up to her and speak English
"Hey, sorry. I'm here for the internship" I say with the biggest smile I can muster
"Ha, yes. Are you an intern from America?" She asks smiling back
"Yes, yes," I say, thank God she speaks English.
"Okay, nice to meet you. Wait" she says as she taps some numbers on the telephone saying I had arrived. She gestures for me to sit and wait, after some minutes a lady in a white top, suit, pencil skirt and black leather shoes. "Hello, I'm Son Jin-yeong. Remember me from the interview" she says extending her hand for a handshake plastering the most professional smile, of course, I remember her, she's the secretary to the CEO.
"Yes, I do remember you. You're even more beautiful in person" I say smiling and accepting her outstretched hand, what can I say, I love complimenting people I meet. She chuckles pulling her hand away
"Come with me, I'll show you the accommodation building, some of our Korean interns prefer coming from home, although some of them prefer staying here. We're responsible for the international ones 'cause they don't know anywhere so we accommodate all of them" she says leading me away from reception. I don't know what to say but I just smile, she continues telling me things about the company that I already read about, and it makes me wonder if I'm getting a private orientation, which if I recall correctly is supposed to be tomorrow.
We finally get to the building and wow, it's like a freaking five-star hotel except we have a roommate in each room like college, Miss Son hands me my room key. "Your roommate isn't here yet, we got an American as your roommate so that your opinions won't clash and cause you two to fight" she says seriously,. No, not an American roommate, I would have preferred someone Korean, I'll get to know them and they can teach me Korean and we can craze over K-pop idols and dramas to binge watch, urgh I'll be stuck with someone that either doesn't like k-anything, or a white person, or an excessive smoker or drunk or a party animal, or maybe, just maybe someone like me that is here to get exposure and experience of the company and country in general, but she doesn't need to know my thoughts, so I smile at her and thank her. As I open the door and I'm about to go in the stops me
"You might want to rest but if you want to take a shower, the general bathroom is floor just above this one" she says to me pointing a the stairs. I thank her again and she nods and leaves
I open the door and the inside is just as beautiful or maybe more beautiful than the outside and it's very big, it looks like two bedrooms merged as one and either end has big beds, study tables and a closet. The walls look like it's made of wood and the floors are covered with a large soft silky rug, the ceiling is surprisingly black and a rod runs across it like a door, wall or even a curtain is supposed to be placed there, I choose the bed with the window which is further inside the room and decide that I will buy a curtain to divide the room to reduce how I and the roommate relate.
After settling in, I start unpacking. I folded my clothes neatly into the closet next, I turned to my study table placing my laptop and backpack then a picture of me and another of me and my family. Next to the bed, the sheets on it are not impressive so I get the ones I brought with me and lay them, I put my travelling bags under the bed. I decide to place my keys and other little things I could misplace in the drawer next to my bed then place my alarm clock on it, yes I came with the infamous alarm clock. After I make sure everything is put away it is already mid-afternoon, I pick up my notebook and write down what I need, like a curtain, I need to duplicate my keys, buy toiletries etc. Satisfied with all that had been written I decide to take a shower, I open up the closet and take out a bathrobe and towel I found there. It feels like I lodged into a five-star hotel, the only difference is I share a room and have a general bathroom, it makes me wonder if every room is like this or if it is just preferential treatment. In my bathroom and the towel slung around my neck, I make my way to the bathroom.
After the shower I start feeling hungry, I pick up the map of the accommodation building the receptionist gave me and try to follow it to the cafeteria, I'm still walking when I realise that I'm lost. For some minutes I still roam around wondering where the hell I am, I take a turn and start walking down a long hall when I bump into a girl.
"Omo. Dangsin-eun dangsin-ui gil-eul bol su eobs-seubnikka, naneun geoui neom-eojil ppeonhaessseubnida (Oh my. Can't you watch your way, I almost fell.)" The petite girl with dyed pink hair packed in an updo with bangs.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see where I was going and I don't understand you" I say to her, she gives me a confused look eyeing me up and down. For a moment I thought she didn't understand me until she "I didn't know they accepted foreign interns now" she said staring suspiciously at me
"I--, um. They do, I'm sorry again for bumping into you, I didn't see you cause I'm lost and I'm just looking for a way to the cafeteria and back to my room" I say scratching the back of my neck
"Oh, you should have asked someone. I'll show you, follow me, let me give you a tour. By the way, my name is Kim Mun-yeong." She says with a smile turning around and leading me out of the long hallway I thought would never end.
"Ah, my name is Rubina Jackson but please call me Rubie" I smile back
"Cool name, Rubie I see us becoming good friends" she says looking up at me and smiling.
