While the fight with Devon was going on, a passerby had seen what the teenagers were up to. It was quite unfortunate that people these days always minded their own business, even amid chaos.
However, this lady didn't just watch as a boy was being ganged up on by four other boys. Although she knew that her help was helpless, she did know people who might arrive in time before the situation escalated further.
However, what she didn't expect was that the helpless boy wasn't as helpless as she initially thought. She had witnessed the boy deal with the bullies in such a brutal way that she had no other option but to worry about the safety of others.
In the end, she proceeded to call the police and report the case at hand.
A street fight wasn't a serious case for the police to worry about, but the case they thought wasn't worth their time eventually took up their time.
An ambulance was called and used to rush the four injured boys to the hospital, where they were being treated.
In the hospital hallway, beside one of the doors that led to the boy's room, a police officer could be seen pacing back and forth with his hand placed on his jaw.
Just then, he heard a ding sound from the elevator at the end of the hallway. Walking out from the elevator was a man dressed in police officer clothing, with a brown beard covering his mouth. He wore a sheriff hat on his head as he walked through.
This was none other than the Chief Officer of the Vanceburg City Police Department, Maxwell Palin. It was unusual for him to attend to matters like a street fight, but something in particular had piqued his interest and that's why he was at the hospital at the moment.
The sergeant saluted him in greeting and then proceeded to enter one of the rooms that currently had a hospitalized patient lying on the bed with his eyes closed.
The patient was bandaged all over, except for his neck. "According to the person who called, she said that he was among those who were picking on a target. You could say he was a troublemaker," the sergeant explained.
"According to the doctor, he was the one who was injured the most in the fight," he added.
"So, who did this?" Maxwell asked.
"He ran away," the sergeant said, his head slightly bent.
"Sergeant Oris, this better not be the reason you called me here," Maxwell said. He knew that Sergeant Oris would call him out of his office just to tell him this.
"I am sorry if I have bothered you while you were busy, but I feel like this is urgent and I had to report it to you right away," Oris said.
He went beside the patient's bed and shifted the bandage around his neck slightly, wide enough for Maxwell to see.
"From the doctor's evaluation, this wound is beyond something one can inflict with just their hands," Oris explained.
"According to the person who called, the fight had been a fistfight for the culprit, yet he was able to inflict such wounds on his opponent that were wielded with weapons," Oris continued.
Maxwell examined the wound on the patient's body. "That's an impressive feat for someone of his age, but this still doesn't make sense. Is there something I need to know?" Maxwell asked.
"I was wondering, perhaps this boy is one of them. I mean the extraordinary ones," Oris suggested.
There was a moment of silence as Maxwell processed what Oris had just said. He soon burst into laughter.
"If this is it, Oris, I am going to get your ass fired for sure," Maxwell said, laughing. His laughter soon died down as he noticed that Oris didn't flinch at the threat.
"Is there more?" Maxwell asked, returning to his usual calm manner.
"When I arrived at the scene, I tried to stop the culprit from moving. The truth of the matter is that I shot him," Oris confessed.
"You what...!" Maxwell shouted in disbelief.
"Yeah... But that's not even the craziest part. The boy... From my evaluation, he is around sixteen years old, yet he was able to take my bullet and still move. He even somehow moved faster," Oris said.
Hearing this, Maxwell remained silent for a moment. It was at that moment the door of the room opened and two figures walked in.
One was a young lady about twenty years old, and the other was a fairly old man, but the man's steps seemed bold and strong.
"What are you two doing here?" Maxwell asked, raising his tone slightly. He knew who these two were - they were the group of beast fighters who had reported about the beast imposter.
In a way, Maxwell blamed them for the beast attack. Since it was their job to kill mutated monsters, why did they allow one of these monsters to run into a civilized area?
"Hey... Don't use harsh words on us. Remember, it is not our job that we are doing. We can decide to leave at any time," the old man said as he walked forward to the bed and observed the person lying on it.
"You probably heard it, right?" Maxwell asked, this time in a much calmer tone.
"What do you think?" the old man replied. "If a boy was able to withstand a bullet and do this with his hands to a fellow person of his age, it is evident that you are dealing with an extraordinary human here," the old man said.
Maxwell's heart shook. At that moment, he had a flashback to a few years ago when something similar had happened. An extraordinary had been discovered in Vanceburg City.
He remembered the chaos that broke out as many organizations fought for ownership of the new extraordinary. The fight had claimed the lives of many innocent people, including a few people he knew.
Now, hearing that there was possibly another one among them startled him and made him fear what would happen in the future.
"Shot him, right? Even if he can withstand bullets, that doesn't mean he is not injured. Were you able to get any blood samples or something?" Maxwell asked Oris. He shook his head.
"There were no blood trails left behind at the scene. The ones we found all belonged to the patients who are already hospitalized here," Oris said.
At that moment, Maxwell felt a headache coming on. He looked at the old man and then at the young lady.
"Can you two keep this discovery a secret?" Maxwell asked.
"Unfortunately, we can't... You see, extraordinary individuals are highly sought after, and it has been said that once one is found, it should be reported. So, I can't," the old man said.
Maxwell was somehow expecting this as their answer. The two beast fighters worked for an organization that would surely reward them bountifully if they were to bring back such a report.
"I'm sorry, my friend, but we still have a beast to catch. In no time, the news will spread, and many organizations will start bombarding the city. It is up to you to act fast and try to get your hands on the possible extraordinary," the old man said as he left the room with his companion.
Meanwhile, all Maxwell could do was clench his fist and grind his teeth together in annoyance.
"Contact Kan... We have work to do," he instructed after calming down.
