It was already dark throughout the city, and in one part of the city that had no street lights nor any stores nearby, it was void of people. At that moment, however, four boys with a blue-headed girl could be seen walking through this dark street filled with broken buildings and damaged roads.
These were none other than Malik and his gang, with Devon being newly among them.
As they moved through the street, Devon couldn't stop looking from building to building as if he was expecting something to jump out at him.
"Knock it off... No one is here. And besides, the people we are waiting for are just ahead of us," Kelly said as she came over to Devon's side, brushing her shoulder against his.
The issue was not that Devon was worried about someone suddenly attacking them; the problem was that they couldn't hear what he was hearing. At each building, there was the chirping of crickets, and although the others could hear it as well, it was louder for Devon than for them. His sensitive ear was picking up every detail of the sound, and it almost seemed like it was right next to his ear.
Devon chose to ignore Kelly for the time being. The group continued their journey on foot, and before long, they seemed to be hearing something from up ahead.
"If I may ask... What exactly happened here? Why are people not living here?" Devon asked before the group could get too engaged.
This part of the city was a place he had never visited before.
"Here... It wasn't always like this. About seven years ago, they discovered something they called an extraordinary in our city. I don't know all the details, but all I know is that the fight for who would possess the extraordinary was the reason behind all this," Malik answered.
Hearing that such a thing happened a few years back, Devon tried to recall such an event but could barely think of anything. 'Seven years ago... That was when Mom died and when Dad was taken away. I wonder if this had something to do with it?' Devon wondered.
He was soon snapped out of his daze by Malik's call. "Get in position, our target is in sight," he said as he led them into one of the half-collapsed buildings at the side.
Meanwhile, from a window facing the group of adults, Malik stationed himself and looked at one of the twins, the one with the sniper rifle.
"Go and take a position and aim carefully. We only have one sniper bullet left," Malik said.
"What... Are you intending to shoot them?" Devon asked.
"What are you talking about?" Malik asked, glaring at Devon.
"They are humans, can't we just use the guns to scare them and then take the money away?" Devon suggested.
"You are new to this... The people you see now have done so many awful things that you can't even imagine," Malik said.
Devon wanted to protest further but was shut down by Malik. "Maybe in the next few minutes, you will understand what I mean," Malik said.
"Stay here... I will go take another position while you hold this," Malik said as he handed Devon a walkie-talkie and then left with the others.
"When it's time to engage, I will communicate with you through that," Malik said as he left.
"Are you sure he is fit to work for us?" one of the twins asked.
"Don't mind his behavior, sooner or later, he will get used to it just like we did," Malik said.
Unknown to them, Devon heard what they said. In the end, he had already signed up for this. He could at least justify himself by claiming he wasn't the one who did it.
'What am I even thinking about? I have killed someone before, right? Bulky's life doesn't count?' Devon thought. In a way, Devon still didn't consider himself the one who killed Bulky, though he knew fully well that it was at his desire that the shadow wolf carried out the command.
He shook off those thoughts and focused on the task at hand. He looked over at the group that was slowly approaching their direction.
There were about twenty adults, some dressed neatly in black suits while the other party was dressed randomly and didn't look professional at all.
Focusing a bit more on his hearing, Devon was able to hear their conversation thanks to his super hearing ability.
"So... Who is this new extraordinary I heard is from this city?" a short man being guarded by people dressed in suits asked, taking a large cigarette into his mouth.
"I would honestly want to see my cash first before I give out the information about what I know," another man dressed in random clothing replied.
The short man snapped his fingers, and a man stepped forward with a briefcase in his hand.
"This is your payment... Fully intact. The moment you deliver the information I want, the faster it gets into your hands," the man said.
"Oooh... If that's so... I have a little surprise for you," the man said, and soon a small-looking boy, barely in his teenage years, was brought in.
From his appearance alone, one could tell the boy wasn't living the best of life. His clothes were torn apart, and he looked dirty.
"A small boy... If I may ask... How did you discover that he had powers?" the short man asked.
"We found him using his power to steal, and we took him. As a reward for what he had stolen, we decided to hand him over to you," the man said.
"I may also ask... What is his power, and can we see it in action?" the short man asked.
"Ahhh... You're asking a lot of questions. Just take the boy already and give me the money. You can always test him out later," the man yelled, but it was then that he had a gun pointed at him by one of the men in black.
"I can see this was just a waste of time... If you wanted to rob someone like me, you should at least come up with a better story. Now, you won't make it out alive," the short man said.
However, in the middle of his conversation, the other party that brought out the kid suddenly opened fire, shooting the man who was pointing a gun at their boss.
The other side also opened fire while trying to protect their boss.
"Fool...! Do you think I can be unprepared? Quick, go for the money!" the man yelled as he also pulled out a gun and pushed the small kid back.
The guard holding the briefcase of money was shot, and he fell.
The boss immediately rushed over to pick up the bag and quickly dashed down the street.
"Stop him...!" the short man shouted, pointing at the escaping man.
Just then, a bullet was fired into his forehead from a far distance.
"I'm out of bullets for this thing," the twin reported as he dropped the sniper rifle.
Meanwhile, Malik, speaking into his walkie-talkie, started giving instructions.
"Devon... The man is heading in your direction. Do your best to hold him back!" Malik yelled.
