Lilith couldn't tear her gaze away from the lifeless body of the librarian, lying still on the library floor. Her emotions were in a chaotic storm, an overwhelming mixture of panic, guilt, and shock. She never imagined that her forbidden excursion into the library's restricted section would lead to such a tragic outcome.
Her first instinct was to flee the scene and retreat to the safety of her room before anyone discovered what had happened. With trembling hands, she carefully stowed away the books she had taken under her bed, doing her best to conceal the evidence of her ill-fated adventure. The consequences of being linked to the librarian's death loomed ominously in her thoughts.
Once the books were hidden, she rushed to the bathroom, her stomach churning with nausea. The guilt that clung to her was oppressive, making it hard to breathe. She barely made it to the toilet before she vomited, her body wracked with dry heaves. When she finally felt like she had expelled the turmoil inside her, she rinsed her face with cold water, as if she could wash away the guilt and dread.
Weak and overwhelmed, Lilith collapsed onto the bathroom floor, her back against the cold tiles. Her racing heart seemed ready to leap out of her chest. She felt light-headed, as if the world was spinning around her. Clutching her chest, she tried to steady her frantic heart, but it proved to be an impossible task.
Just when she thought she might faint, the door to her room creaked open, and Ava stepped inside. Her eyes widened in alarm at the sight of Lilith on the bathroom floor, her face contorted with distress.
"Everything's fine now, take a deep breath," Ava said soothingly, rushing to Lilith's side and wrapping her in a comforting embrace. She stroked Lilith's hair gently, offering a lifeline amidst the chaos.
Lilith followed Ava's instructions, trying to regulate her breathing. Slowly but surely, her heart rate began to return to normal, and the overwhelming panic started to subside.
"It's all right now. You've got a bit of a fever; why don't you take a shower?" Ava suggested, helping Lilith to her feet. She led Lilith into the bathroom and ran a warm shower, handing Lilith a fresh set of clothes.
Mechanically, Lilith followed Ava's instructions, allowing herself to be cared for in her fragile state. Once she was dressed, Ava guided her back to her room and tucked her into bed.
"I won't ask you what happened, but you'd better get some rest now," Ava said gently, preparing to leave.
Lilith's hand shot out, grabbing Ava's before she could retreat. "Stay with me just for tonight," Lilith implored, her eyes seeking reassurance.
Ava hesitated for a moment before nodding. "All right," she agreed, slipping under the covers beside Lilith. She pulled Lilith close, holding her in a soothing embrace. She felt Lilith's heartbeat against her chest and stroked her hair gently, trying to bring comfort.
"Sleep now," Ava whispered, pressing a tender kiss to Lilith's forehead. Lilith initially tensed up but soon relaxed into Ava's embrace. She hoped that this closeness would help Lilith find some peace.
Sleep remained elusive for Lilith as her mind continued to replay the events of the evening. Guilt and fear threatened to consume her, and she desperately sought a distraction.
The following morning, Lilith and Ava were awakened by the sound of Ava's mother opening the bedroom door. As she entered, her eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Lilith and Ava snuggled up in bed together, wrapped in each other's arms. It was evident to her that they had gotten quite close during the night.
Ava's mother couldn't resist a mischievous grin and a playful tone as she said, "Well, well, what do we have here? Looks like you two had a cozy night."
Lilith's face turned beet red, and Ava blushed as well, a mixture of embarrassment and amusement washing over them. They exchanged a sheepish glance, realizing they had been caught in such an intimate moment.
Ava's mother chuckled and added, "Don't worry, that's what married people do."
With that, she and Ava exited Lilith's room, leaving her to get ready for the day. Lilith quickly showered and brushed her teeth, trying to regain her composure after the embarrassing encounter.
Downstairs, as Lilith joined Ava and her family for breakfast, Lilith's father, who was also the king, spoke up with a grave expression. "I have some troubling news. The librarian has disappeared."
A hush fell over the table as everyone exchanged concerned glances. The king continued, "It seems there was an incident at the library last night, and she hasn't been seen since. We don't know what happened, but we're launching an investigation."
Guilt washed over Lilith once again, and she couldn't help but wonder what consequences would come from the librarian's disappearance and whether her secret would remain hidden. She knew that the weight of her actions was becoming increasingly difficult to bear, and the specter of discovery loomed ever larger.
