Chapter 12 : A Newsworthy Story

Tahir was silent beside me as we walked to the exit. I was eager to be out of the hospital, but I was also trying to decide what to say to him. Judging by his silence and the stiffness in his shoulders, he was waiting for me to do or say something.

The tension between us was stifling. My gratitude was warring with my suspicion. Tahir had helped my dad just as he’d promised. He told me that he couldn’t tell me how he would do it and I’d agreed to those terms. It would be unfair of me to ask questions now.

But I couldn’t stop myself.

“What did you do?” I asked abruptly.

Tahir sighed in a way that told me he’d been anticipating the question. “I can’t tell you that.”

Can’t, not won’t. What reason could he possibly have for not being able to tell me? I decided to try a different approach. “What is that armlet, really?”

It was going to drive me insane not knowing what was going on. I couldn’t stand unanswered questions.
