Chapter 33 : Saint George and the Dragon

There was an intense pain in my head that throbbed with each beat of my heart. It made me wish that I was still unconscious. My body ached too. My joints felt stiff and ached as though I’d been sleeping in a very awkward position.

As the memory of the confrontation with Popescu returned to me, a numbing dread settled into me. I wasn’t able to fight them off. Manny had put something over my mouth, then… darkness.

I opened my eyes, but I couldn't see anything. Wherever I was, there was no light source at all. I was in a blinding, pitch blackness. Or I’d gone blind, but I really didn’t want to consider that possibility. It was cold and the air felt damp and smelled musty.

My chest burned every time I took a breath. It was probably the after effect of whatever sweet, pungent chemical Manny had used to render me unconscious. I must be in a basement or something.
