Chapter 36 : Returning Home

I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the sight of Lila and Tahir flying in tight, controlled formations above the clearing. Leilani had to do it for me, by stepping in front of me. Her eyes were the same deep brown that they were in her human form and I recognized the impatient, annoyed look she was giving me.

“I’m sorry,” I said breathlessly. I was suddenly feeling far more pained than I had been when I first made it out of the cave. The adrenaline must be wearing off.

Leilani lowered her head for me to climb onto her back. I rushed to comply, but I didn’t want to pull her hair in order to drag myself up. Her long, powerful tail wrapped around me and lifted me onto her shoulders. I lay forward and held onto her mane tightly. Her hair was silky and soft beneath my fingers.

She didn’t waste time waiting for me to get comfortable. The moment I grabbed on, she beat her wings and we started to rise into the air. It was a good thing I wasn’t afraid of heights.
