Chapter 46 : Why Her?

A long, high wailing sound cut through the tension in the air. I didn’t dare take my eyes from Popescu, but he turned and stared down the long, winding drive. The sound rose and dropped steadily and grew more distinct by the second.

“It’s a siren,” I said softly.

There weren’t many other houses this deep in the woods. I held my breath as I listened a few seconds longer. The sound was definitely growing louder. I turned to Tahir in a panic. “It’s a siren! You need to shift back!”

Popescu sat on the ground, facing the driveway, and waited silently. He seemed deflated. There was no way he could make an escape before the police arrived. Not on foot and not by himself. He seemed to accept that.

Tahir cursed and shrank down to his usual form. He stumbled a little and I caught him before he could fall. I could see blood on his chest and arm from Popescu’s attacks. In this smaller form, the pain he was in must be much more concentrated.
