On the morning of the meeting, Allison arose early, had her breakfast, and proceeded to her room to prepare for the day ahead.
This day marked her return to work following a three-day leave. Once she was ready, she visited her mother's room, where her mother was already awake. She informed her that she would be leaving for work early due to a busy morning schedule.
Allison then mentioned that a meeting was to take place at work, during which the new director of clinical services would be announced. Her mother wished her good luck, after which Allison departed for the clinic.
The day prior, she had instructed her secretary to reschedule all her morning appointments, as she had a meeting scheduled for the afternoon.
Upon arriving at the clinic, she noticed a considerable number of patients waiting for her. Immediately upon entering her office, she began attending to them one by one.
Despite her previous disagreements with Chuck, Allison was a dedicated professional who took her responsibilities seriously. Many patients appreciated her attentiveness, contributing to a full clinic schedule. She worked diligently to ensure that she could address her patient list before the meeting commenced.
While she was preoccupied in the clinic, Chuck, Sandra, and the elderly gentleman were occupied in the office. Chuck had informed the elderly man that he was planning to go on a date with Sandra after work. As a result, both Sandra and Chuck were keen to ensure that all necessary tasks were completed that day before the meeting commenced.
Later in the afternoon, prior to the start of the meeting, Allison successfully completed her list of patients and left promptly after confirming that all individuals had been attended to. Upon arriving at the boardroom designated for the meeting, she found several doctors, including Dr. Dorothy, already engaged in conversation, while others were preoccupied with their mobile devices.
Allison approached Dr. Dorothy's seating area and took a seat beside her. "Hello, Dr. Allison," greeted Dr. Dorothy. "It appears you've been quite busy today?" Allison replied, "Yes, Dr. Dorothy. I had requested my secretary schedule all my patients during the morning shifts. Fortunately, today was not my clinic day, allowing me to arrive here earlier."
As their conversation continued, Dr. Dorothy recalled a previous encounter and turned to Allison, saying, "A few days ago, I attended to a gentleman who inquired about your whereabouts. Unfamiliar with him, I asked why he was looking for you, and he mentioned he was your husband. When did Chuck come to the hospital for treatment? I was unaware that he was unwell." Allison silently thought to herself, "Could it be that he hadn't mentioned his headaches to me? Was that the night I told him I was on duty?" Nevertheless, she reassured herself, "It no longer matters; he is no longer my husband."
Turning back to Dr. Dorothy, she explained, "It is true that I was married to Chuck, although it was not my choice; my grandfather arranged our marriage. However, I must clarify that I am no longer married to Chuck, as we finalized our divorce just a few days ago."
Upon hearing Dr. Allison's remarks, Dr. Dorothy turned to her and affirmed that she had made the right decision to divorce Chuck. She suggested that Dr. Allison should seek a wealthy partner who could provide for her. "Dr. Allison, you are both beautiful and affluent; you have the potential to attract a suitable and financially stable man—one who can care for you and is undoubtedly superior to your ex-husband, even if we cannot deny his handsomeness," Dr. Dorothy advised. However, they were unaware that circumstances had shifted dramatically for Chuck, who had become wealthier than they could have imagined.
Meanwhile, in the president's office, Chuck had informed his grandfather that he had spoken with Sandra, and she had agreed to go out on a date with him following their work commitments. Together, Chuck and Sandra worked diligently, striving to complete their tasks before the meeting, foregoing even a lunch break to ensure they would not need to return to the office afterward.
It was not until 2 PM that they finished their work. By that time, the vice president had already entered the boardroom accompanied by his secretary, and the meeting commenced promptly upon their arrival.
Before Chuck, Sandra, and Mr. Miller departed the office, Mr. Miller informed Chuck that he would be the one to announce the new director of clinical services—a decision previously agreed upon with the vice president. Although Chuck had never before addressed such a large assembly, he nodded in acknowledgment, showing no objections.
As the three of them made their way directly to the boardroom, they observed that three seats reserved for executives remained unoccupied, and they promptly took their places.
The attendees in the room were taken aback to see an unfamiliar older gentleman accompanied by a stunning young woman and a handsome young man whom they had not seen before.
Turning to Dr. Dorothy, who appeared astonished, Dr. Allison inquired, "Dr. Dorothy, are we in the wrong meeting?" Dr. Dorothy responded, "Is that not your ex-husband? When did he become part of the executive team? Is he from a wealthy family? Just look at how handsome he is." Throughout the years of her marriage to Chuck, Allison had never heard him mention any affluence, and she was aware that he had no known family members.
They were the only individuals familiar with Chuck, and they were perplexed as to why he was present, let alone seated among the executives, where he appeared remarkably composed, seemingly unaffected by the scrutiny of the two doctors.
Raising her hand, Allison sought to address the situation, feeling the need to confront Chuck. She had never imagined that he would still be alive, much less in the same room with her. The moderator noticed Allison's raised hand and granted her the opportunity to speak.
"My name is Dr. Allison May, and I am the head of the medical team in the outpatient department," she introduced herself. "Do you have anything to say before we continue with the meeting?" the moderator asked. "I was just wondering what that young man sitting next to the director of the secretaries is doing here in our meeting." Unaware of Chuck's identity, the moderator turned to him just as he prepared to respond, but he was interrupted by the vice president.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the young man you see here is not pertinent to our discussion today. I advise you, Dr. Allison, to take your seat so that we may proceed with the meeting," the vice president stated firmly.
With that, he sat down, allowing the moderator to continue with the agenda. Although Allison felt humiliated, she resolved to remain seated until the meeting concluded. She determined to confront Chuck afterward for an explanation; however, little did she know that the Chuck sitting in the same room was no longer the man she used to command.
