THE LAST STRAW

The next day at school, I was surprised to see Rex waiting at the entrance. His face lit up with a smile as soon as he spotted me, and he motioned for me to come over.

I quickly bid goodbye to Isabel, giving her a kiss on the forehead and saying, "Be good, Isa. I love you."

She nodded enthusiastically, replying, "I love you too. Bye."

Since Mom wasn't able to take us to school, it became my responsibility to ensure Isabel was comfortable before she left with the hired driver.

"Mr. Adams, please drive safely," I said.

"I will, ma'am," he assured me before starting the car and driving away.

I rushed over to meet Rex, and to my surprise, he eagerly grabbed both of my hands.

"Guess what?" he exclaimed.

I was momentarily caught off guard, my mind racing for ideas before jokingly responding, "You won the lottery?"
