For some time after that, Jane Howard tried very hard to establish a friendship with Helen Blair, but Helen just wanted to make her feel bad, so she treated Jane very coldly, making Jane feel like she was putting her warm face against Helen's cold buttocks.
In the mornings, sometimes Helen would be so focused on washing and dressing that she would forget to fold her blanket. Jane would fold it for her, hoping to elicit a positive response from her, but when Helen saw the neatly folded bed, she would laugh and say, "This reminds me of when I was at home, and the servants would always fold my blankets for me."
Jane's face flushed and turned pale.
During classes, Jane would choose the same courses as Helen. When she wanted to sit next to Helen, Helen would say to her, "Sorry, but this seat is already taken." Soon after, either Mike or another classmate would occupy the seat.
Jane felt angry and annoyed.
