On Christmas night, the school held a dance, with students returning to the school to participate in the festivities. The girls would wear their evening gowns, boys suited up in their tuxedos, for an evening full of fun and celebration.
Jane Howard had no formal dress. While Amelia Walker covered her living expenses, she wasn't going to allow her to live extravagantly. Jane was anxious, knowing if she showed up to the ball in her everyday clothes, she would undoubtedly be the subject of ridicule.
That's when Helen Blair pulled out a cheongsam she had prepared in advance for her.
The cheongsam was a vivid red, beautifully embroidered with intricate patterns, the threads interwoven with golden and silver strands. The embroidery sparkled brilliantly under the light, irresistibly capturing everyone's attention.
Helen Blair held the cheongsam up to Jane Howard with a smile and said, "This is for you!"
