For the following few days, Helen Blair would spend an hour at the nursing home of Serpent River to visit the elderly residents. In the beginning, she was simply longing to understand their living conditions so that she could better renovate the old folks' home to their needs, and in turn satisfy Isaac Campbell.
But gradually, she noticed that although the seniors were taken care of and free from want, they still felt lonely and helpless. Especially after hearing news about the upcoming sale of Serpent River, they were extremely worried about their future circumstances.
One of them, Grandma Wang who had been partially paralyzed due to a stroke, confided to Helen, "Like me, incapable of managing my own life, relying on others for every trivial thing, no matter where, I'm the unwanted. Here, at least President Campbell takes care of us, but once I'm sent somewhere else, I know I will no longer enjoy this peaceful life."
