Reuben Carter thought he had no one to control him, so he hung out with some local ruffians, getting worse and worse. He got into fights, stole, gambled, and drank heavily. Finally, he was arrested for sexually assaulting an underage girl and sent to a juvenile detention center.

A few months later, Amelia Walker came out of rehab but relapsed and harassed Ruby Carter. She stole money and jewelry from Ruby, and the mother and daughter fought fiercely several times. Ruby had to send Amelia back to rehab, but each time Amelia came out, she continued to harass Ruby. Finally, all the money Ruby had was gone due to Amelia's schemes.

To maintain a high-end lifestyle, Ruby had no choice but to sell herself, suffering quietly amongst various men. Then one day, she got involved with a married man, and his wife publicly stripped her naked and beat her. Ruby couldn't handle the humiliation and went mad on the spot.

She would spend the rest of her life in a mental hospital.
