Chapter 42 : A Million Reasons to Stay

Haven’s POV

Forty-one. Forty-two. Forty-three. Wait… was I counting bikes too? Or just cars?

I sigh and rub my eyes for what feels like the millionth time.

Counting cars was one of those childhood games that my parents and I used to play all of the time. I would count how many cars passed that were black while my mom would count red cars and my dad would count silver.

It used to be really fun when I was little, but it somehow has lost its amusement while I sit here on the steps of my apartment building. How long has it been since he’s been gone? Cruz said he was just going to be a couple of hours. Was he delayed? Did something come up?

I glance at my phone and swipe open the screen to look at the time.

Wow…

Four hours…

I have been sitting here for four hours.

I stare at the time and my message app out of pure habit at this point. I stare at the messages I sent Cruz.
