Through that laughter, Vicky saw the darkest side of Tod.
He was as if pressing on his unspoken accusation against Vicky.
Did he care how their family was fairing on?
Tod had shown Vicky that he really didn't care what happened to her family or to her education, as long as she continued resisting him.
She had tried to coerce him to admit that he was responsible for all the misfortunes and pains they were facing. Although he did not say it directly, he somehow agreed that he was responsible. Then Vicky had asked him what he wanted from her and he was clear in his intentions. He wanted to lie with her.
"It is up to you if you want to save them… all you have to do is one simple thing!"
"Just once?" Vicky had asked him.
She was drowning and straws could be helpful to her at that very moment. So she wanted him to commit a word that he would have her only once and it would be all over.
If only this once and my family would be okay, she thought.
