In a daze, I ambled through the market for dinner produce and headed towards the restaurant, taking my time to process things. My mind was still buzzing with unanswered questions. Why had my mother kept Jill in the dark about Bill? She was, after all, far more than just her lawyer.
And how and why did she sell, or more like GIVE her inheritance to Bill? Had Bill known that I had been told about him and that I was going to Idaho all along?
“So much for leaving the past behind me,” I sighed as I pulled up to my restaurant.

The lunch crowd was already long gone by the time I walked in the door, the staff had closed up shop to prep for the dinner crowd.
Neither Kendra nor Thomas was in the kitchen when I arrived, which was highly unusual. “Where is everyone?” I asked Thomas’ assistant.
“Erm, on break, I guess?” he answered awkwardly.
“On break? Thomas doesn’t take breaks,” I stated suspiciously.
“I dunno. I went out for a smoke and they weren’t in here when I came back.”
