Chapter-15; Selflessness

"He has already lost a lot of blood, he won't make it if you continue like that" the healing magic was no good, the wound was too deep.

"Can you do any better?" The healer looked worried, I could guess why.

I nodded. "You are not a healer, how can you?" The healer frowned.

"If the crown prince dies in your hands, you will be stripped off your duty and probably be framed. Don't you want to save yourself?" The healers looked at each other, their intentions clearly flashing in their eyes.

The third division healer said "it will only be worse for you, but you have to take full responsibility. Spell your promise." It was obvious that they'd gladly take the opportunity to save themselves.

Spell-ing your promise is basically to cast a spell on the people who are promising, that if either one of them breaks it, they will feel intense pain and die if they don't accept the truth.

l agreed, then proceeded to examine his wound. The wound had reached below the fat tissues. Though how do they know his organs were safe? How am I supposed to operate without really knowing anything!

Tyrell's body looked pale, his blood pressure was dropping, his pulse getting faint with every second.

So l decided to do the stitches, atleast I had to stop the bleeding immediately! What would any other doctor do if they were in my place? Is it because I'm inexperienced? Self doubt began clouding my mind.

My hands were shaking, which was not a good sign before operating.

I told them to bring me the ointment I had prepared earlier. I took in deep breaths and cleaned the wound first and started with the sutures.

After it was done, I told the healers to cast their healing magic. Soon, the wound looked like it had been there for more than a few months. Then it suddenly clicked. What if it was like fast forwarding the cell division or basically like just on the applied area! So should I be looking into light attribute as well? Why was it called the light magic? ls it because it is somehow related to speed of light? Not to mention that the healers only took a few seconds to heal him after I stitched his wound, so it can be...

"Are you going to leave it like that?" A healer asked. "Oh! No, you have healed his wound so it is not needed now' I replied and quickly started undoing it.

I applied some ointment on his wound and cleaned up the mess. There were blood stains on the floor and on my hands and uniform as well. I quickly collected everything and just when I was about to discard the needle and the used thread for stitches, it had some white and yellowish deposit on it. It again made me wonder about the light magic's relation with time. I was deep in thought while doing everything, it was muscle memory, I believe.

I went back to the "operation room", sat on a chair next to Tyrell's bed and checked for any other injuries. But there was no way of doing an x-ray or mri. There was no way of telling what his condition was right now, while he is unconscious. We will have to look out for the slightest changes since we don't have any advanced tech here. I realized just how easier things were with technology. We were so dependent on machines.

A slight moan escaped Tyrell's mouth, snapping me out of my thoughts. I quickly got up to check his pulse. My ears waiting to hear his voice. My eyes waiting for his gentle smile. Yet, he was lying still.

I felt a weird stinging sensation in my heart. My vision got blurry because of the tears welling up in my eyes that started falling without any prior warning.

I got up to wash my face when I noticed a black film on the cabinet. My eyes opened wide as they seemed familiar. I quickly picked them up and it was an x-ray film of abdomen and pelvic region! There were no fractures! A sigh of relief escaped my mouth.

He had yet to wake up but atleast now I know that he hadn't sustained any life threatening injuries. The only problem was his fever and blood loss.

We had given him antibiotics to help with infection and 7.5 g kakkonto and 7.5 g shakuyakukanzoto were given simultaneously which was proven to work wonders for tetanus. The discoloration and swelling should soon go away. Though how did they get an x-ray? Don't tell me that's magic! The whole medical industry would collapse if magic were to exist in my world!

A day had passed, repeating the same things. A maid came with my meal, but I couldn't even think about eating. I was pacing back and forth, wiping Tyrell's body with cold water so his fever goes down, checking his pulse, examining his wound was all I did the whole day.

**

I felt someone gently brushing my cheek waking me up from deep slumber. I opened my eyes and that were blessed by the sight of a half naked greek god. He was half naked when I stitched his wound but I hadn't noticed him like that!

"Did I wake you up? l am sorry but I couldn't help it, you looked like you were having a nightmare, I just couldn't stop."

"N-no, what! You should be the one resting! When did you regain consciousness? Where is the heal-"

"It's okay, they came to check on me." I finally saw the smile I was waiting for but I couldn't help but notice that he looked weak, which bothered me. His RBC and platelets were low I believe. I put my hand on his forehead to check his temperature. It was back to normal, thankfully. I once again looked at him and examined him to see if he was really okay and looked away. What was that feeling? Was I that tensed and worried?

"Am I not in a good shape?" He sounded genuinely concerned, like seriously concerned.

"And why would you think that? You just wanna hear some compliments" I replied to which he said "why did you turn your face like that then? Am I not attractive for y-"

"Couldn't it be just the opposite thing?" I interrupted. Why did I say that! Oh dear Caius, what had I done to be born so stupid?

"So you turned your face because you find me too attractive?" After a pause he continued "females really are hard to understand." I bursted out laughing at his unexpected remark and took the opportunity to run away.

I went to the rear support unit's medical camp where the injured were being treated.

The overwhelming smell of antiseptics and blood triggered the memories of my busy life as a doctor started coming back to me. The healers were examining the patients, sewing the wounds, fixing displaced bones and the dead being taken away. The screams of patients in physical pain and their relatives who struggled to hang on the last thread of hope and sanity.

A healer helped me look for the little boy and his mother.

The little boy who had rosy cheeks was lying unconscious, his skin looking pale. His head covered in bandages. On the other side his mother's body, lying lifeless.

The healer said "the woman's last wish was for her Azuro to live a happy life... She was very strong." Tears threatened to fall from my eyes as I was reminded of the beautiful sight of the mother who was so happy with her son, not having a clue of what was about to happen.

What were my parents' last thoughts? Were they selfless even just before their soul left their body? Is this child going to have that void inside him too? Can anything really bring back his mother? Will he be able to accept anyone else after this?

Tears continued to fall down as I had more and more thoughts clouding my mind.
