Serene rubbed her hands on the cup of hot chocolate. "Thank you, Lachlan."

"Don't meet your friends anymore, they won't help you, trust me on that."

"I know now," she said.

"Everything is going to be alright, okay? You can live with me."

"Of course," she said. "There is nothing I want more."

But the reporters hounded her at the shed day and night, until Lachlan himself ended up on the news. Thankfully, they didn't know who he was and since he was lower class, they couldn't be bothered to. But that was the final straw for Serene.

She was sleeping beside him as usual when she got up late at night to remove her secret bag from a hole she had dug up over time. She put it on her back and snuck out of the shed, slowly making her way to the only remaining place she knew which was safe.
