The Star-Crossed Duo

Two days later, Emerald and I reached Stella's capital, the Crowned City of Aurum, where the royal family resided and the Council's hall stood. As we disembarked from the train, a red-haired half-elf approached us, shrieking at the top of her lungs. "EMMY! ANDY! OVER HERE!" The energetic teenager jumped up and down, holding a sign and displaying uncharacteristic cheerfulness.

"Oh, how I missed Ruby, but where's Sapphire?" I inquired, noticing a shadow beside the half-elf, that extended on its own and transformed into a girl—another version of Ruby, but with blue hair. "Here I am, Big Brother," Sapphire replied, embracing me before Ruby.

"Hey! I want to hug Big Brother Andy too!" Ruby exclaimed, pulling her twin sister away from me so she could also embrace me.

Chuckling, I embraced Ruby and Sapphire, who were Emerald's little half-sisters but had always referred to me as their big brother since we first met at Lord Shayol's manor. Emerald glanced at her sisters, and they composed themselves. "Shall we head to the palace, Emmy?" Sapphire asked, tapping the bags with her index finger, causing them to vanish into her shadow.

"That depends on the timing of Andy's appointment with King Regis. I believe it's scheduled for this afternoon. So, we should visit the Adventurers Guild to handle the matter of transferring some assets to Andy from his father," Emerald replied, and we began walking, with her sisters trailing behind. I followed behind, contemplating what the guild held on behalf of my father.

The quartet strolled down the bustling streets of the Holy City, and the twins took turns asking me about my various adventures around Aurus. I recounted stories about Nassun, Acedia, and how I inadvertently provoked the sea guardians but managed to subdue them with Emerald's assistance. I also mentioned the gifts I received from Nessa and Marshall, old friends of our group. Upon arriving at the Adventurers Guild, a twinge of fear and regret washed over me, causing me to freeze in place.

"I do not wish to go... Whatever my father possessed should stay with him. He is not deceased—I am certain of it. Accepting this would mean they are admitting the demise of the guild leader..." I paused, ready to walk away, yet Bartholomew appeared to welcome us.

"Welcome home, Young Master," he greeted, bowing to the Saint Class Magi. "We've been expecting you for quite some time."

I had never been able to refuse the Guildmaster, so I followed Master Bartholomew into the hall. Passing by the front desk where I had sat as my father, the previous guildmaster, distributed bounties and missions to various adventurers over the years, memories flooded my mind. I recalled the day I received my guild card, marking my advancement to an Advanced Ranked Magi. Accompanying Bart to the office, my heart couldn't help but be touched by the memorial display of Team Saber since their disbandment. I saw a photograph of my father's smiling face right at the center of it all. As we entered the office, once belonging to Solomon, Bart confessed with genuine emotion, "I truly miss him every single day."

"Now, Fire Saint Andeus Izuna, we received your form from Empress Fall two days ago. Everything is in order, and the credits for your official guild work over the past two years have been transferred to you. However, I must emphasize that awakening the sea guardians in Acedia was a terrible idea. The Orbs of Jade, Garnet, and Cobalt are not to be trifled with," Bart began, pacing as he spoke. "The Chancellor honestly wanted you imprisoned for that transgression since it was unsanctioned, but the king and I talked him out of it. As a Saint, you must remember that you have a responsibility to represent the guild and your nation while abroad."

I simply nodded, realizing it was futile to explain why I sought the orbs, considering Bart was the one who informed me about the God's Age Magic they possessed. However, I dreaded the next part of our conversation.

"Now, regarding your father's estate through the Guild, typically it would pass to your mother. But following her untimely passing, it must be transferred to you. As the former crown prince and founder of the guild, the property, including a sizable plot of land within the capital, must be handed to his remaining kin—that is, you. I understand it's difficult to accept, but as an adventurer, having a place to call home can be a lifesaver," Bart explained, conjuring the necessary paperwork from thin air.

"Do I really have no choice but to accept it? Isn't there a possibility to hand it over to the Guild?" I questioned, feeling a heavy weight in my heart. The thought of keeping the house and its painful memories was the last thing I wanted.

"Regrettably, no," Bart expressed with a hint of disappointment. "As dictated by the former crown prince's will and the guild's regulations, it must be handed down to either you or your mother. I understand that this may be difficult to accept, but embracing the idea of having a place to call home is crucial for an adventurer. It is what he genuinely hoped for."

I looked at Bartholomew and lowered my head in resignation. I didn't want to accept it, but I had no choice. I signed the paperwork for the transfer and shook the Guildmaster's hand. "I need to see His Majesty now. I'll be in touch," I stated as I turned to leave.

Bartholomew reached out and gently placed his hand on my shoulder. "Congratulations, Andeus! Your parents would be incredibly proud of you," Bart said warmly, giving me a supportive pat on the back before continuing on his way.

In that pivotal moment, as Ruby and Sapphire stood by my side in the lobby, their unwavering support provided a glimmer of solace amidst the looming uncertainty. Sapphire's words echoed in my ears, informing me that Emmy had already made her way to the palace. It was clear that they were determined not to let me face the impending challenge alone.

Yet, despite their presence and their determination to stand by me, a wave of despair crashed over me like a merciless tide. It felt as though every ounce of vitality within me had been drained away, leaving behind only a hollow emptiness. The weight of the impending ordeal bore down on my shoulders, and the thought of confronting it seemed insurmountable.

My instincts screamed for me to flee, to find refuge in the comforting shadows of denial. The urge to escape the harsh reality, to avoid the trials that awaited me, surged through my veins. But deep down, I knew that running away would only prolong the inevitable. The challenge would still loom over me, casting its ominous shadow until I mustered the courage to face it head-on.

Struggling against the conflicting emotions that threatened to engulf me, I mustered the strength to pull away from the twins, desperate to catch my breath. My trembling legs betrayed me as I collapsed to my knees, my body succumbing to the weight of abject terror. Every breath was labored, as though each inhale was filled with the suffocating fear that gripped my heart.

In that vulnerable moment, surrounded by the echoes of uncertainty, a flicker of resilience emerged from within. I knew that I couldn't succumb to fear, no matter how paralyzing it may be. The support of Ruby and Sapphire, their unwavering loyalty, served as a reminder that I wasn't alone in this battle. Together, we would confront the darkness that lay ahead, drawing strength from each other to defy the overwhelming odds.

With trembling hands and a determined spirit, I pushed myself up from the cold floor, steadying my gaze forward. The path ahead was treacherous, but I knew that I couldn't turn my back on the challenge. Clutching onto the unwavering support of my companions, I took a deep breath and steeled myself for what lay ahead.

Entering the royal chamber, I caught sight of my Great-Uncle, King Regis Aurum Stella. Immediately, I knelt down to bow before him, and the Girls followed suit. With a wave of his hand, Regis signaled for us to rise. "Welcome back, my dear nephew," he greeted, rising to his feet and approaching me for a warm embrace. It had been quite some time since I last saw him, probably around the time of his coronation.

"I am sorry for the way I handled things, your highness, I didn't know how to handle the losses over the past ten years, I shouldn't have ran away like I did," I said as he pulled me into a hug.

"I know how the loss of your parents and grandmother affected you, my nephew. It affected me as well to lose my sister, niece-in-law and nephew. The family will always protect and watch over you, that is the Stella way," He said with a smile.

The rest of the meeting went as I expected, my Uncle, the King of Aurum placed his hand upon my head and using the powers of the IX, which he wore upon his head, the fabled Crown of Rule, he granted me the ranking of Flame Emperor, a promotion from Saint-class. I felt a rush of magical power surge through me, not unlike that of the spirit magical particles I gather to use the God's Age magic that I dabble in. "Uncle, were the IX created during the Age of the Gods?" I inquired as he withdrew his hand. He laughed and affirmed, "Indeed, the IX were brought into existence by our ancestor, Lucius Rocti Stella, the General Commander of the Unified Army, through his remarkable utilization of the legendary First Wish."

I wavered for a moment, the fabled first wish was the most grievous sin mankind had performed by calling the golden one to the world. But to have brought into the world the keys of salvation, the IX, weapons and tools to drive back the darkness was remarkable.

Leaving the palace, the group parted ways with Emerald and her sisters, who returned to their dorms at the Academy. I had the task of introducing myself to the staff at my father's estate. They hadn't seen me in quite some time, and I was informed that some members of the staff were new. As I strolled through the bustling streets of Aurum, memories flooded back to me—times when I would play tag with Siegfreid and Zinnia, the crowned prince and princess, my dear cousins. I wondered where they were, as they weren't in the palace today when I suddenly heard my name being called out.

"Andeus as I live and breathe," Siegfreid exclaimed as he gracefully landed next to me. His voice held a mix of surprise and delight as he regarded me.

I couldn't help but smile at the unexpected encounter with my cousin. "Siegfreid! It's been too long," I replied warmly, feeling a rush of nostalgia for the days when we both used to play together in the streets of Aurum.

Siegfreid's eyes sparkled with mischief, a trait he had carried since childhood. "You've certainly grown since I last saw you. How has life treated you, dear cousin?"

As the two of us caught up on the years that had passed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging and comfort in the presence of family. Aurum's streets, filled with memories of my youth, suddenly seemed a bit warmer and more familiar.

As Siegfreid, the Lightning Emperor, handed me a missive from the Academy, my expression shifted from one of nostalgic warmth to surprise and confusion. I took the parchment and quickly scanned its contents, confirming that it was indeed an offer for a position as a special instructor in advanced spellcasting at the Academy.

My mind raced as I tried to process this unexpected opportunity. The role they were offering was prestigious and carried great responsibility. I had always been dedicated to my magical studies, but the prospect of teaching others, especially at such an esteemed institution, was a significant leap.

Siegfreid grinned, sensing my inner turmoil. "It seems the Academy recognizes your talents and potential, Andeus. You've always been a gifted mage, and now they want you to share your knowledge and skills with the next generation."

He paused for a moment, his gaze turning thoughtful. "Consider it carefully, cousin. Teaching can be a fulfilling path, and you'd be contributing to the growth of our magical community. But of course, the choice is yours."

With Siegfreid's words in mind, I was left with a pivotal decision to make — whether to accept the role of special instructor and embrace the responsibilities that came with it, or to continue your own magical journey in a different direction.

As Siegfreid and I stood there, contemplating the offer from the Academy and catching up on old times, there was a sudden interruption. Zinnia, Siegfreid's younger sister, appeared on the scene with her personal guard, Knight of Winter. Her presence added a lively and familial touch to the gathering.

The three of us shared a warm embrace, a moment of connection that transcended the passing years and responsibilities that had come between us. It was a reminder of the strong bonds of family that had always been at the heart of our relationship.

With a reluctant smile, Siegfreid finally yielded to his sister's call to return to the castle. Duty called, and he couldn't stay away for long. I bid my farewells to them, knowing that I would see them again soon.

As they departed, I turned and continued on my way to my new abode, carrying with me both the weight of my responsibilities and the warmth of family ties. The future held exciting challenges and opportunities, and I was determined to make the most of them.

Entering the grand manor as the late afternoon sun cast long shadows, I was met with a warm and welcoming reception from the staff. They had been summoned by the chevalier August, acting on the instructions of Bartholomew, to receive me and make me feel at home.

The staff members, dressed in their formal attire, greeted me with smiles and nods of respect. Their demeanor was professional, but the warmth in their eyes conveyed a genuine sense of hospitality. They were well aware of my family's legacy and my newly acquired status as an Emperor-class Magi.

"Welcome home, Emperor Andeus," one of the senior servants said, bowing slightly as a sign of respect. "We have been eagerly anticipating your arrival. Please, allow us to assist you in settling into your new abode."

The manor, with its grandeur and history, now stood as my residence. It was a place where I could continue my magical pursuits and perhaps even prepare for my role as a special instructor at the Academy. As I embarked on this new chapter of your life, the support of the staff and the embrace of my family's legacy surrounded me, offering a sense of belonging and purpose.

August's words carried a deep sense of respect and loyalty as he stepped forward to address me. His voice was somber, reflecting the collective sorrow of the staff for the loss of Lord Solomon, my father.

"Master Andeus," August began, his tone measured and sincere, "I speak for the entire staff when I say that we are profoundly saddened by the passing of Lord Solomon. He was not only our master but a beloved member of this household and the community at large."

He continued, "We swear to you, as we did to your father, our unwavering loyalty and dedication. We shall serve you with the same devotion and commitment that we have always shown to the Stella name. Your well-being and your father's legacy are of paramount importance to us."

The staff members gathered there nodded in agreement, their expressions reflecting their solemn oath. It was a poignant moment, one that underscored the deep sense of duty and honor that bound them to my family. In their words and gestures, I could feel the weight of their commitment to stand by my side as I stepped into the role my father had left behind.

As Sylvia, the dragonborne head maid, led you to your room, a flood of memories washed over you. This was the room where you had spent countless hours as a child when you visited the manor. It held the echoes of your youth, and being here now brought back a sense of familiarity and comfort.

Sylvia, perceptive and considerate, mentioned that she understood my preference for this room over my parents' chambers. Her words reflected her understanding of my emotional connection to this space and my need for a familiar and private refuge.

I expressed my gratitude to Sylvia, and she nodded in acknowledgment. She signaled to two maids who were standing by to assist me. As they carefully helped me remove my crimson coat, they immediately sensed something extraordinary about it. It was as if a touch of magic was woven into every fiber, and they knew that my grandmother, the former queen of Aurum, had used her formidable spellcraft to create this unique garment.

The maids handled the coat with great care and reverence, understanding its significance. It was a reminder of the powerful lineage I came from, and it served as a tangible connection to my grandmother's legacy.

As the maids left your room, I found myself in the peaceful solitude of the familiar surroundings. The spacious room held both the memories of my childhood and the echoes of my family's legacy. It was a place where I could gather my thoughts and reflect on the tumultuous events of the past few years.

Sitting on the bed, I couldn't help but think about the incredible journey I had undertaken. The memories of participating in a civil war in the sands of Karna, where the very earth seemed to hold ancient secrets. The battles you had fought against two of the ocean guardians in Acedia, the realm of water and mysteries. And the momentous encounter with the Vampira Queen, a figure of legend and dread.

These experiences had tested my mettle, honed my skills, and shaped me into the Emperor-class Magi I had become. They were a testament to my strength and resilience, as well as a reminder of the challenges and adventures that lay ahead.

In the quiet of my room, you had a moment to collect my thoughts and contemplate the path that had brought me here. I knew that the future held new opportunities and responsibilities, and I was ready to face them with the wisdom and determination that my experiences had bestowed upon me.

Emerald stood by the window of her dorm room in a different section of Aurum, gazing out at the world beyond. Her thoughts raced like the currents of a river as she contemplated the return of Andeus, her first love, after three long years apart. Those years had been filled with longing and longing, an agonizing separation from the one who had captured her heart.

Yet, in that solitude, she had grown and learned. Her mind had matured, and she had come to understand the valuable lesson her uncle had imparted to her. She had blossomed into a strong and independent individual, capable of standing beside Andeus as an equal partner rather than someone in need of protection.

As she looked out at the city of Aurum, her heart filled with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. The prospect of reuniting with Andeus after all this time was both exhilarating and anxiety-inducing. She was no longer the girl he had known three years ago, and he had undoubtedly changed as well.

Emerald's thoughts turned to the future, filled with the possibilities of what their renewed relationship might bring. She was ready to face it with confidence and the newfound understanding that love could be a partnership of equals, where they could support and uplift each other on their respective journeys.
