When Darlene walked down the steps again, Brandon's car was already parked in the front yard.
He opened the car window and said to her, "Get in the car. Sit in front."
Darlene didn't know him that well and was worried that it would be inappropriate to sit in front with him. When she approached, she glanced at the back seat.
Brandon did not get out of the car either. He leaned over and opened the passenger door for her. Then, he explained, "I put some clothes and a medical kit in the back of the car. It's messy and may not fit you."
Only then did Darlene get into the passenger seat. She sat still and fastened her seatbelt.
When she looked sideways again, she noticed that Brandon was studying her.
She felt self-conscious about the way she looked with her hair tied up. But then she remembered seeing the nurses in the hospital with their hair tied up in buns and wearing nursing hats.
