John was so lost in thought that he hadn't noticed anything unusual about Elizabeth.
He only realized something was amiss when she stopped walking, and he followed suit. He then explained, "What I mean is, before Madam Hart passed away, Mr. Hart was doing better. Even though he drank, he would control himself and not drink for a while before seeing Madam Hart, so she wouldn't smell alcohol on him. But since Madam Hart passed away, nobody can control Mr. Hart anymore."
John talked a lot, but all Elizabeth could see was his lips moving. She couldn't hear a single word he said.
Suddenly, she couldn't hear anything around her.
Her ears were ringing, and she couldn't see clearly. At first, she could see John's lips moving, but then everything became blurry until she couldn't see anything at all.
