"Ouch!"
The first thing he felt was stunning pain and a buzzing headache.
The drawback of heightened immunity to pain in that state, was the overwhelming amount that came when he felt all his injuries at once.
Bian slowly sat up with a wince, first looking at Han Yan, who was sprawled beside him, then at Man Tian, who was seated and keeping guard.
He immediately forgot about his injuries when he saw Han Yan.
The fight had literally cost her an arm and a leg.
It was so close that Bian considered running away.
Better it is to live and fight another day than to perish.
Thankfully, they came out on top in the end. Their injuries were grievous, but at least no one died.
In fact, Man Tian was just slightly burned all over—he would heal in a couple of days.
Their pets and Bian himself would make a full recovery in a week.
Only Han Yan had sustained debilitating wounds, which might take months or years to recover from, even with the blood-pulse sutra.
All in all, this was quite the substantial result.
The only reason Bian didn't jump up to celebrate was because of the losses.
Yi Dongmu, Xie Qing King, Hope Spirit, and many more had perished.
Was it his fault?
Both yes and no.
He didn't believe that Executioner White had just wandered to the shelter.
No, someone must have guided him there.
And there was only one person capable of such a thing.
"We were set up by Executioner Black!"
Bian exclaimed.
Han Yan turned to face him with her pale face, and Man Tian stood up from his meditating position to walk closer.
Bian stroked her forehead gently as he explained.
"Executioner Black—Ouyang Ming—was the one who led Executioner White to us."
Man Tian had a grim look, while Han Yan's expression was too pale to make out her facial expression.
"But why did he do that? For mutual destruction, or was he planning to get you killed?"
Man Tian had some impression of this Ouyang Ming.
Bian had mentioned he was the one who told him about Executioner Green.
Then he later explained how he had lived with the guy for four years during his stay in the academy.
Bian reasoned about Man Tian's question for a while.
Why did he set them up?
First, he helped Bian, then he helped the Executioner?
To what end?
"Maybe... but that would be ridiculous."
Bian muttered under his breath.
"What is it?" Man Tian asked.
Bian looked hesitant for a moment before he spoke.
"He could have led him here to watch our fight. So that he could learn all our powers and how to defeat us."
"That doesn't make sense. If he really was watching us, then why didn't he finish us off after the battle was concluded?" Man Tian added.
"B-because he still needs us."
A weak voice responded.
"Isn't that right, Bian? There were three branches from that pillar of light earlier, meaning three more execu—"
cough cough
Bian patted her back and took over.
"Three more Executioners are still out there. He's using me... using us to get rid of the other Executioners, absorbing their powers along the way."
Bian couldn't help but smile.
Such a devious plan.
Even if Bian found out, which was almost a certainty, he couldn't do anything about it.
So what if he was using them to eliminate the Executioners? Weren't they also using him to achieve the same goal?
They had to kill the Executioners either way, and he was making it easier for them.
So even if he was aware of his plan, what could Bian do?
A devious plan indeed.
"Yeah, it makes sense now. When the light pillar split into three branches, two of them broke the vacuum, while the last traveled into the distance."
"Into the distance?"
Bian was unconscious when this happened, so he wasn't aware of it.
"Yes, the last branch. Pure white, but stained with blue and green. It kept going into the horizon and vanished from sight."
Man Tian affirmed.
"So he really was watching us."
Bian said solemnly, remembering those golden vertical pupils that seemed to cover the world.
'With those special eyes, maybe he really could observe us from inhumane distances.'
Bian was right. Executioner Black had been monitoring them for a long time and had seen their fight from beginning to end.
He was surprised when Bian's Emperical Aura covered the entire sanctuary.
Luckily for him, Bian wouldn't spot him with such a large range.
He was too focused on the fight, and there was too much information to sort through to spot a single person in the entire sanctuary.
After watching their victory, Ouyang Ming turned around and walked up the ten holy steps, evolving to become a demigod.
---
Back in the present moment, A day has passed since thier battle.
Bian was still worried about Han Yan.
Regenerating limbs was no small matter, to the extent that even an average demigod couldn't do so.
At least a current demigod.
But through evolution, her body would be rebuilt and thus her limbs regenerated.
The sooner she did so, the better. Life was full of unforeseen events, after all.
Han Yan fetched a blood-red pill from her pocket.
Apparently, it was given to her by a blind man who claimed to be sent by her father.
She swallowed the pill, and her complexion turned a little rosy in the next instant. Obviously, she had regained some strength.
She was well aware that with the looming threat of the Executioners and other powerhouses over them, they had to get stronger as soon as possible.
There were only adults here. Bian wasn't about to drop a cringe line about how the Executioners were only after him, they should stay away from him, blah blah blah.
He would help them through anything, and he knew they would do the same for him.
Although his marriage to Han Yan would be slightly delayed, she was about to get stronger, which still counted as a win for both of them.
"Are you ready?"
Bian asked.
Han Yan confirmed she had opened all her gene locks. She sent most of her beast souls to Bian for him to redistribute later.
Even a super beast soul would become useless in the Fourth Sanctuary. It was better to hand them over to other surpassers.
When everything was ready, Bian placed a palm on her back and sent her most of his energy.
This was a function that could only be performed by two practitioners of the Dongxuan Sutra.
Energy Transfer.
With a swoosh, dirt and sand were blown away as a surge of power filled her being.
She summoned the Holy Angel, who flapped her wings as the Silver Fox jumped on her shoulder.
Then Han Yan began to circulate all her power.
Her feet left the ground, and she began floating to the sky.
An illusory black door appeared in the heavens above. Slowly, the illusory door became real and trembled.
As the doors swung open, a stairway was revealed within them.
Pure white fire was blazing like an inferno, threatening to burn anything within it to ashes.
These weren't normal flames, as most top-tier surpassers couldn't survive the holy flames.
Han Yan landed on the first step and took in a deep breath.
The scorching flames danced around her but could not break her skin.
She hopped from one step to another, the incinerating flames increasing with each step.
Still, she wasn't weak in any way.
Her foundation was monstrously powerful and was shown in full effect as she climbed up to the ninth step albeit with great effort.
Her skin was burning, and her injuries were aggravated, but she bit her lip and pushed on.
The Holy Angel and Silver Fox pushed through the fire with their master, both enduring the incinerating flames.
As Bian watched her step onto the tenth step, he saw a flurry of images as the white flames converged towards her.
Her missing arm and leg grew back from the incandescent flames, and along with the burnt skin, her body was repaired to its prime condition.
The Holy Angel and Silver Fox were also surrounded by the brilliant flames and underwent their unique evolution.
Before he could glimpse any more, the door closed and disappeared from the sky.
"This means my fiancée is a demigod now."
Bian turned to face Man Tian with a smile.
Man Tian burst out with laughter, and upon looking at Bian's face, laughed some more.
"I guess I didn't tell you, my wife is a demigod herself."
"What!" Bian exclaimed.
Then, thinking about it, he recalled that Man Tian always praised his wife for being the most beautiful woman ever, yet he never mentioned her rank.
"Married to a demigod..." he muttered.
