Placing the tray on the side of her writing desk, she called me over with a flick of her hand. "My son told me all about you." Her tone wasn't exactly friendly, but I wasn't put off by it either. "It was a kind thing you did, bringing your pack's doctor here. Very risky," she looked over her shoulder at me briefly before turning back to her room, "but very courageous."
Unlike Jude, Carmen didn't come across as the easy going, upbeat person. Then again, I could hardly blame her.
"It was no big deal."
"You could have gotten yourself into a lot of trouble for that. Not only with your own pack, but also with this one." She took a seat behind the desk and offered me the other. "Why did you do that, Miss Berry?" Her tone was distant, almost as if she was talking to a business associate rather than a young girl.
"Why aren't you calling me Carlie?" It was obvious that she knew my first name. There was no way Jude would have referred to me as Miss Berry.
