Dr. Ethan helped the cow deliver the afterbirth while Oliver exited the holding pen. I waited in place near the cow’s head. Mila began gathering the supplies. She looked up at Oliver and smiled.

“Hey, Ollie?”

“Yes, Mila?”

“Put down that whiskey you forgot about and come help.”

He grinned ear to ear and joined her.

“What can I do?”

She pointed at the calf puller.

“Take that somewhere with a spray hose and spray it down. If we let any of the fluids dry on it, they will stick.”

“Sure thing, babe. Clean-up duty, it is.”

Dr. Ethan and I shared an amused glance, though Ethan never stopped working. He washed her back end up with more of the antiseptic solution from the bucket, then dropped all the small, dirty supplies in to soak.

He grabbed a couple of two-inch long, one-inch wide pulls and pushed them inside 312. He spoke over his shoulder while he worked.

“Before you ask, Oliver, These are antibiotics. Just in case.”
