Evangeline
"Wow, Eva. You kept this," Hannah said, looking at a framed photo.
A girl with chocolate brown hair and light brown eyes stood next to a shorter girl with blonde hair and emerald green eyes. They wore matching Minnie Mouse costumes and appeared to be around eleven or so. It was me and Hannah during her birthday party. Cute.
I smiled as I looked at the framed photo that Hannah had picked up from the shelf. It was a snapshot of a moment frozen in time, capturing the essence of our friendship from years ago.
"Yeah," I replied, my voice tinged with nostalgia. "I've kept it all these years."
Hannah's fingers traced the glass covering the photo, her eyes fixed on our younger selves. "I remember this," she said, a hint of wistfulness in her voice. "That was the best birthday party ever. And you made it so special, Eva."
I moved closer to her, our shoulders brushing as we both gazed at the photo. "It was a fun day," I agreed. "But you're the one who made it special, Hannah."
She turned to look at me, her eyes shining with sincerity. "You've always been there for me, Eva. Through thick and thin. I don't know what I'd do without you."
My heart swelled with warmth at her words. "The feeling is mutual, Hannah. You're not just my best friend; you're like family to me."
We shared a heartfelt moment, our bond strengthened by the trials and tribulations of our current situation. It was as if the world had conspired to bring us closer, forging a connection that was unbreakable.
Hannah took a deep breath, her gaze never leaving mine. "Eva," she began, her voice soft yet filled with determination, "when we find your brother, Alex, and when we see your dad again, it'll be like a reunion of a lifetime. We'll make sure of it."
I nodded, a lump forming in my throat. "I know we will, Hannah. And when that day comes, it'll be because of the strength and support of the family we've found in each other."
As we continued to reminisce about our past, sharing stories and laughter, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, I had found a friend who was willing to stand by my side, facing the challenges of this new world together.
As the night grew darker, we settled into a comfortable silence, the memories of our childhood mingling with the hopes for our future. The bond between Hannah and me had deepened, transcending the confines of friendship and evolving into something even more profound—a shared journey through the trials of survival and the strength to overcome them.
