The automated gate slowly opened, and I revved the car's engine. I hoped there weren't any zombies just outside that gate.

"Okay, guys, no turning back," I declared as I started driving out of the driveway. I stole one last look back at my house through the side mirrors. I wondered when, or if, I'd ever be able to return. That place was filled with memories, both good and bad.

I quickly averted my gaze and focused on the road ahead. It appeared fairly deserted, devoid of both zombies and humans. Nonetheless, my heart began to thump louder and louder as we approached the city. Although we had no intentions of traveling through it, caution was never a bad thing.

"Hannah?" Oliver inquired, casting a concerned glance at her. Hannah simply shook her head.

For now, we were safe.

"Three of them west," Hannah yelled as she spotted two males and a female zombie. Assuming we could still gender them.

"Liana, take the shot," I ordered.

"On it," Liana positioned her rifle and attempted to take a shot at the female zombie.

First shot, a miss.

Second shot, a miss.

"Liana, focus. Those things aren't people anymore. You took down some at the school, and you can take them down now. Just concentrate," I said, trying to stabilize the car so she could line up her shot.

Killing those three wasn't necessary, but it provided everyone with an opportunity to learn. Shooting targets and living creatures were two different things, even though those things couldn't be considered living beings.

She took a deep, steady breath and aimed at the zombie that was now running after us, along with its friend.

"It's dead. It's not alive," she whispered before sending the bullet straight through the female zombie's skull.

"Good job," I praised, and she offered me a small smile. "Now, take out the other two."

"Roger."

One shot, two shots, then a bull's eye.

We drove for a while until we finally made it to the city exit where Alex and I had agreed to meet. There was no sign of Alex, but it was still early. I hoped.

"Seems like we're early," I said, trying to ignore the dread at the pit of my stomach.

Alex is alright. Alex is alright. Alex is alright. Alex is alright. Alex is alright. Alex is alright. Alex is fine.
