Chapter 36: Rebirth From Fear

Sakura wasted no time in embracing Kankuro, seeking solace in his presence. As she held onto him tightly, Kankuro could sense the rapid rhythm of her heartbeat against his chest. Concerned, he inquired, "Are you alright? Maybe I should have dealt with him before we departed."

Gaara stepped back from the tense scene, his face etched with concern. His voice filled with caution, and he said, "Kankuro, let's not act rashly. We all feel the same, but reacting impulsively won't solve anything."

Kankuro stared piercingly at his younger brother and murmured, "Sometimes I wonder if he forgets we're older than he is."

Sakura chuckled softly, then turned to Gaara with a curious expression. "So, how long do you think we'll stay here?"

"For the night," Gaara replied, his gaze fixed on the sky above. "I decided to halt our journey when I noticed a hawk circling overhead."

Abruptly, Kankuro's playful demeanor shifted to one of seriousness as he inquired, "A hawk? Which direction did it come from?"

Gaara's troubled expression confirmed their suspicions that the news was grim. With a heavy sigh, he relayed, "The message is from the Hidden Mist Village."

"What happened?" Sakura inquired, her concern evident.

Gaara crumpled the letter in his hand, his brow furrowing as he rubbed his forehead. "Yagura, the fourth Mizukage, is dead," he revealed.

Temari interjected optimistically, "Gaara, It might not be related to the Akatsuki."

Sakura nodded and replied, "I heard he was despised by many for his exploitation of the weak, among other crimes," she added.

Gaara shook his head. "No," he corrected, his voice heavy with sorrow. "A masked Akatsuki member manipulated him, forcing him to commit those atrocities. Ao's Byakugan released him, but the liberation proved fatal, resulting in his demise. Yagura was the Jinchuriki of the three-tailed beast, Isobu."

Sakura's eyes widened in horror. "A masked Akatsuki member?" she repeated, her voice trembling. "Did the message describe the mask?"

Gaara shook his head sadly. "No, the message didn't describe the mask. But I did warn the other villagers about the individual you mentioned, and I'm certain it's the same person. It's truly a tragedy. His wife is seven months pregnant."

For a moment, the three stood in solemn silence, contemplating the fragility of life and the cruel hand fate had dealt them. They couldn't help but acknowledge that they could have easily been in the fourth Mizukage's position. Yet they also recognized the grim reality that tragedies like this could happen again. The threat of the Akatsuki loomed large, and despite their efforts to defend themselves, sometimes it felt like they were fighting a losing battle.

"Sakura, you should get some rest," Kankuro said, feeling the exhaustion heavily on him. "Come on, I'll have the Shinobi on high alert tonight in case something happens." He led Sakura through the sandy desert towards their temporary shelter under the cold, fading sun.

Meanwhile, Temari turned to Gaara with a concerned expression. "Will you be able to rest tonight, or are all three of us going to be on edge to protect her with our lives?"

Gaara's frown deepened as he glanced towards the horizon, his mind racing with thoughts of potential threats lurking in the shadows. "I'm not going to sleep tonight. The Akatsuki are everywhere, and we should be safe rather than sorry. Let's keep up a good watch tonight."

"Right," Temari replied, her eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger as they prepared for a long, restless night.

Kankuro led Sakura to an area bustling with Shinobi, their admiration for her evident in their warm smiles and respectful gestures. They parted ways to reveal a beautifully crafted bed on a platform adorned with intricate designs. As Sakura took in the sight, she couldn't help but feel touched by their kindness, momentarily forgetting the reasons behind their unwavering support.

Whispering her gratitude, Sakura said, "Thank you, everyone. Your kindness means the world to me."

"You can repay their kindness by allowing yourself to rest," Kankuro replied softly, his voice comforting. "Let us take care of everything from here. You've endured enough in the past few days."

With gentle guidance, Kankuro helped Sakura settle onto the plush bed, tucking her in with tender care. Before leaving, he leaned down to kiss her forehead gently, a silent gesture of comfort and affection.

As the sky darkened, Sakura sat on her bed, her legs crossed, and allowed the tranquility of the evening to wash over her. Closing her eyes, she savored the moment, but her mind couldn't help but drift to the pressing concerns that weighed heavily on her.

In the quiet of her thoughts, Sakura pondered the Akatsuki's motives, their relentless pursuit of the tailed beasts, and the ominous implications it held for the world. "Are they planning a war?" she whispered, the words hanging heavy in the air.

Suddenly, a deep growl shattered the silence, jolting Sakura from her thoughts. She opened her eyes to find herself in the dim confines of Shukaku's cage dimension, the imposing beast looming before her.

Meeting Shukaku's bright yellow eyes, Sakura asked. "What do you mean?"

Shukaku's replied with an ominous warning. "If I reveal too much, it could alter the course of your destiny," he rumbled. "But know this—the Akatsuki's power extends beyond your comprehension without the power of a tailed beast. They need beasts for a more significant plan."

Sakura's heart raced with fear as she grappled with the implications of Shukaku's words. "Are they capable of such devastation?" she cried, her voice echoing in the darkness.

Before she could receive a clear answer, Shukaku abruptly severed their connection, leaving Sakura alone with her mounting dread and unanswered questions.

Sakura jolted awake in the human dimension, her eyes widening as they transformed into a bright yellow hue adorned with Shukaku's distinctive black markings. As the sand enveloped her, she shouted Shukaku's name in a primal, bellowing screech.

The three siblings stood frozen in shock, their hearts pounding with fear, as they witnessed Sakura's transformation. Turning their heads swiftly to face her, they braced themselves for the sight of the colossal Shukaku. Yet, to their astonishment, the beast that emerged was only a fraction of its massive size, its form contorted in apparent agony as it transformed.

Panic seized everyone as they confronted the unleashed beast. Their faces were frozen in horror; some reacted with lightning-quick reflexes, darting away to safety, while others found themselves trapped in Shukaku's deadly grasp. Gaara swiftly erected a platform of sand, vaulting onto it to soar toward Sakura and intervene before the situation escalated further.

Temari sprang into action, wielding her colossal fan to whip up powerful gusts of wind, hurling Shinobi out of harm's way. Amidst the chaos, the group had overlooked Kenjiro, still confined in shackles with a paper bag over his head. His muffled voice pierced through the tumult, demanding answers amid the chaos. "What's happening? Is that Shukaku? I thought the Akatsuki had taken him!"

Kankuro dashed towards Kenjiro, his fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt collar as he whisked him away from the chaos. With urgency in his movements, he summoned his puppets to corral the surviving Shinobi and clear the danger area.

Kenjiro's voice echoed amidst the turmoil, his confusion palpable. "What's happening? Why are you choking me?" he shouted.

Kankuro replied, "I'd rather see you imprisoned for life than risk Shukaku killing you here and now."

Kenjiro fell silent, stung by Kankuro's blunt words. Though a pang of guilt flickered, he remained defiant, unwilling to admit fault.

Gaara stood resolute before Shukaku's towering form, fully aware that Sakura was battling within to suppress the transformation. He recognized her newfound strength, fueled by the love of her family.

Raising his voice to be heard above the chaos, Gaara called out, "Please, Shukaku, cease this struggle. We cannot afford to reveal your presence here in the Land of Wind."

Shukaku's growl reverberated ominously as he retorted, "You underestimate the impending doom, Gaara. No matter your efforts, your world is destined to fall. You will witness the loss of all you hold dear."

Gaara remained resolute, his hands weaving through intricate jutsu seals as he warned, "Release her, Shukaku, or I'll be forced to seal both of you away in eternal confinement. I beg you, don't push me to take such drastic measures."

Shukaku chuckled, echoing through the tense atmosphere. "You lack the chakra to execute such a jutsu," he taunted.

Gaara remained composed and said, "Sakura revealed her method of summoning you from the past. I took precautions and researched countermeasures," he explained calmly.

Shukaku's expression shifted to a frown. "So you plan to sacrifice her and me along with her. I find that hard to believe," he retorted skeptically.

Gaara met Shukaku's gaze with determination. "I may not have performed the jutsu before, but I am prepared to take the risk," he affirmed resolutely.

Shukaku's sand skin glistened with sweat as he said, "Gaara if you proceed with that jutsu, you might not survive," he warned urgently.

Tears welled up in Gaara's eyes, and he softly replied, "It's a risk I'm willing to take."

Fear etched across Shukaku's features as he realized the depth of Gaara's determination. Despite his horror, he couldn't help but admire Gaara's unwavering resolve.

Temari and Kankuro rushed to Gaara's side, hoping to dissuade him from sealing them.

Before Gaara could initiate the jutsu, Kankuro stepped in, his puppetry at the ready, and pleaded, "Don't do it, Gaara. There must be another way."

Gaara's resolve remained unshaken. "It's too late. Our world isn't safe with them around anymore," he asserted.

Kankuro's desperation grew as he implored, "You don't understand. She's everything to me. Please, you can't do this."

Gaara's voice remained steady as he countered, "No, you don't understand. She was my only love, and then she chose you. If I can't have her, then neither should you."

Kankuro's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're sealing her away out of spite, not necessity," he accused bitterly.

Temari interjected, trying to calm the escalating tension. "Let's talk this through calmly, Gaara. We can find another solution."

Tears streamed down Gaara's face as he confessed, "Shukaku told me that no matter what I do, the world will perish. But if I seal them away, perhaps there's a chance to save our planet."

"Gaara..." Temari murmured.

Kankuro's voice softened as he acknowledged, "We'll find another way together, Gaara. We still have time."

Gaara released the hand signs, his arms dropping to his sides. As Shukaku gasped heavily and collapsed, the sand covering Sakura dissipated, freeing her from Shukaku's grip. Sakura gazed up at the night sky, a sense of liberation washing over her as if she had been reborn.

The sudden outburst from Shukaku drained all her chakra, leaving her to collapse on the sand. Exhausted and overwhelmed, she had never felt such a violent, involuntary transformation before.

Kankuro rushed to Sakura's side, his hands trembling as he brushed the sand off her face and clothes. With tears streaming down his face, he gently kissed her lips and whispered, "I'm sorry, I should never have left you alone. Why does this keep happening to you? You've endured too much already."

Temari turned to Gaara with determination in her eyes. "We need to get her back to the village immediately," she urged. "We must find a way to prevent this from happening again, no matter what it takes. You may be the only one to train her to control Shukaku."

Gaara watched them, his expression grim. With a nod to Temari, he clenched his fist and turned away. "Place her in the Litter; we're leaving now," he ordered, his voice firm and resolute.

Throughout the night until dawn, Kankuro remained by her side, offering his silent support. She found solace in his presence, drifting into a dream where she stood upon the shore, gazing at the radiant sun painting the horizon. In her dream, she envisioned a world where peace reigned supreme, where the echoes of war were mere whispers of a distant past.
