Tang Li and Yi Minghuan decided to cease their confrontation with Yi Wanjing and wasting their time with him.
They made their way to the door of their room and slowly pushed it open. Inside, the room lay shrouded in pitch-black darkness, rendering everything invisible.
Yi Minghuan gestured to Tang Li, instructing her to wait by the door.
Tang Li, peering anxiously into the room, offered a word of caution, "I've placed the lamp and matches on the table. Just be careful not to bump into the chair."
He entered the room cautiously and groped around until he found the kerosene lamp.
Before Tang Li could finish her sentence, Yi Minghuan's face twisted in discomfort as he stepped on something sharp. He kicked forward and then to his left and right, confirming that the room was strewn with objects.
Without needing a closer look, Yi Minghuan understood the situation—they had been burglarized and not by outsiders but by their own family. They were most likely searching for money or valuables to snatch and hurry away with.
With a heavy heart, Yi Minghuan made his way to the table, stumbling over various items in the dark. He eventually located the kerosene lamp but couldn't find the matches.
He emerged from the room, clutching the lamp, and said to Tang Li, "The room is in shambles; don't go in. Watch your step, as it's cluttered with things. I'll head to the kitchen to find a source of fire."
Tang Li's heart brimmed with anger upon hearing this.
Why couldn't these people grant them even a brief respite?!
"What kind of family is this! They're almost as bad as enemies!" she muttered to herself.
It was evident to Tang Li that their room had been ransacked—likely in search of money or anything valuable to snatch and avoid leaving anything behind for them to use.
Tang Li hadn't even taken a breath when Gu Xiulan, awakened by the disturbance at the door, emerged from her room fully dressed. She unleashed a torrent of furious scolding upon seeing them.
"You son of a bitch, you bastard! You come back and break your mother's door. Why didn't you just die outside?" Gu Xiulan berated them angrily.
"Minghuan, go and beat Yi Wanjing to death! If she dares to cause trouble again, we'll set the house on fire and send Yi Wanjing with her to the underworld!" Tang Li hissed through gritted teeth, her voice oozing malice.
Gu Xiulan was taken aback by Tang Li's cold and stern tone. She screamed back, "I dare you to try!"
"Then try it and see if I dare," Tang Li retorted coolly.
"Mother, mother, please stop making a scene! Go back to sleep," Yi Wanjing implored.
Though he didn't believe that Tang Li was capable of murder, he was convinced that Yi Minghuan was ready to teach him a lesson, given that he was already approaching him.
"You claim to not wanting to cause trouble, then why cause trouble? How do you explain rifling through our belongings?" Tang Li snorted, her voice dripping with contempt.
"A cornered rabbit will bite! I am truly infuriated, so I set fire to the house! We're parting ways anyway, and there is nothing here that belongs to us anymore," Tang Li declared with venom.
"You... how dare you! If you set fire to the house, you'll be arrested! You'll be shot!" Yi Wanjing scolded sternly.
"Even if I did set it on fire, as long as you claim I did without any third-party witnesses or evidence, who will believe your words?" Tang Li retorted with a sarcastic smile.
"Do you truly believe anyone would trust your and your mother's slander after what happened today?"
Yi Wanjing's face flushed with anger, resembling a pig's liver. Gu Xiulan scolded Tang Li, likening her to a monster and expressing a desire to kill her.
Tang Li glanced at Gu Xiulan and muttered to herself, "If I were truly a monster, the first one I'd silence is you."
"Mother, please stop scolding!" Yi Wanjing was startled by Tang Li's words. He no longer believed Tang Li to be a monster but rather suspected she had gone mad.
Quickly, he intervened, restraining Gu Xiulan, and inquired, "So, what do you want?"
"As compensation for today's incident, provide us with two bags of food! I will let this slide, and we'll move out tomorrow morning. Otherwise, I'll set this house ablaze. You can test my resolve," Tang Li declared, her voice cold and unwavering.
In the face of shameless individuals, the barefoot were unafraid of those who wore shoes.
Confronted by such ruthlessness, Tang Li was prepared to meet it with equal viciousness...
