"Master, we want to come over to look at used books and magazines and buy a few," Tang Li said with a smile as she handed her belongings to Yi Minghuan.
The old man nodded and replied, "Oh..., then you guys come with me. There are a lot of books, and they are all piled up inside." Without further ado, he led them to the warehouse in the back.
This is not the first time the old man has received people who came to search for books, so he understood what she meant when he heard her.
Yi Minghuan put away the bicycle, grabbed his things, and followed behind. As they approached the door, Tang Li couldn't contain her excitement and exclaimed.
"My God! So many books!"
Inside the warehouse, Tang Li was already on her knees, immersed in the dusty and disorganized old books.
"You can pick whatever you want. We sell them by weight, five cents per half a kilogram," the old man informed Yi Minghuan before heading outside. He also agreed to watch over Yi Minghuan's bicycle.
"Minghuan, look at this! 'Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry Self-study Series.' These are essential exam review materials, and this 'Algebra.' There are so many Chinese textbooks; it's like a library! Wow! The books I want are also..."
Tang Li gushed with enthusiasm, completely unfazed by the dirt as she kneeled amidst the books and marveled at her new finds.
Every time she found a book, she'd show it to Yi Minghuan, offer a few words of praise for it, and set it aside.
Caught up in her excitement, Yi Minghuan set his belongings aside and joined her in the search. He had not completed junior high school, so his knowledge base was quite limited. His dream of attending university was a formidable challenge.
Junior high school textbooks were relatively easy to find, but high school textbooks were scarce. Most students nowadays did not focus on mathematics, physics, and chemistry in their high school classes.
After about an hour of searching, Tang Li had lost track of how many books she had found and set aside for herself. Yi Minghuan finally stood up and called out to her in exasperation:
"You've picked enough!"
"What?!" Tang Li stopped and stood up, surveying the pile behind her with surprise. "Ah?! When did I pick up so many?"
Yi Minghuan couldn't help but smile at her disheveled appearance. Dust covered her face, with smudges on both cheeks that made her look very funny.
Seeing Yi Minghuan's amused expression, Tang Li attempted to wipe the dirt from her face with her hands. But instead of making it better, she only made it worse.
"Come here and let me help you wipe your face first," Yi Minghuan chuckled and suggested she clean her face first.
He extended his dirty hands towards her, indicating that she should clean her face with his clothes.
"...Oh," Tang Li muttered in embarrassment. She glanced at her soiled sleeves and couldn't stand looking at them, so she tiptoed over to Yi Minghuan.
She gently rubbed her cheek against his shoulder, trying to keep her movements innocent.
'She felt that she would remember this way of wiping her face forever!'
As she finished, Yi Minghuan declared, "There, it's clean," and turned his attention to the books she had gathered. He noticed medical books, various foreign works, and even some comics. "Do you want this one?" he inquired.
Tang Li hesitated for a moment and then admitted, "It looks interesting, but I've never seen it before. It's quite different and novel."
Yi Minghuan shrugged and said, "If you like it, keep it. These picture books aren't heavy."
"Thank you! I'll just take one or two," Tang Li replied, her face lighting up with a smile.
With the pile of books growing around them, the two of them continued their search, each discovering treasures that sparked their curiosity.
The old man outside was delighted to see his books find new homes, and the dusty warehouse echoed with the excited voices of two young people who had found a hidden treasure trove of knowledge.....
