Chapter 12 : The Autumn Ball

Erik’s POV

Eyes were on us when we entered, an announcement made the moment we walked through the Grand Hall. Not that I minded the attention, but I noticed how Poppy’s hand tightened on my arm.

I looked down at her and noticed how well the red hair played off the red in my jacket. The lavish green robe she wore suited her well and complimented what I’d chosen to wear. I’d be blind to not notice how lovely she looked.

Conflicting feelings warred in my head. Side-by-side, we looked awfully good together. And I felt equally satisfied and annoyed by that realization. The announcer stated our names and station, and for our first public appearance together, the entire room seemed surprised to see the princess next to a dark elf.

“Follow my lead,” Poppy murmured just loud enough so I could hear her. She seemed tense, more so than usual. She had a tight smile, waving shakily toward the attendees.
