Chapter 23 : News of the Attack

Poppy’s POV

“Poppy! Poppy! Open the door!” Dot’s voice shouted outside my chambers, waking me from my shallow sleep. Accompanied by loud knocking teetering on banging. “Are you okay in there?” Then it was quiet. “Where’s the key? Does anyone have the key?”

There were more voices. Panicked voices.

I blinked the exhaustion from my eyes, getting out of bed to answer the door. That was odd, I don’t remember locking my door. Goddess, what time was it?

“I’m coming!” I shouted. “Calm down. Calm down!” I tied my nighttime dressing gown further around my body, thankfully no longer in my robe after Erik sufficiently helped me damage it. I’d have to have it washed before I even attempted to wear it again. At least my handmaidens changed my sheets every morning so I wouldn’t have to sleep on them tomorrow night.

A warmth coated my cheeks as I unlocked the door.
