I wiped some dust off my cheek before continuing to dust the shelves in the library. I highly doubted that anyone even came in here except for me. That was evident due to the fact that aside from the dust on just about every surface, the room was neat and tidy. I was thankful that there was at least one room in the house that was safe from my stepfamily’s destruction.

I skimmed a few of the titles of the books as I dusted. I loved how our collection was such a perfect mix of my parents. There were airplane and aerospace books that Dad loved to read. Mom had been a diehard fan of the classics, so there were plenty of Austen and Bronte's titles mixed in with the more technical books.

I set the feather duster down on my father’s large mahogany desk before pulling a well-worn copy of Tess of the D’urbervilles from one of the shelves. Dad had said it was Mom’s favorite book.
