Chapter 16: Something About Abbie

*Mia*

I hugged my duffle bag close to my chest as I rode the ferry into the city.

I had to wait a while to leave until Lucia was out of the house. She would definitely be suspicious if she saw me leaving the house with my duffle bag and after her warning the other day about knowing if I was lying about where I was, I decided to play it extra safe.

Lucia was a tall, thin woman and liked to appear graceful, but fortunately for me, she was loud around the house. If I opened the basement door just a crack, I could listen and figure out where she was in the house and if she was moving around a lot. Her daughters were the same way, but somehow louder and more clumsy.

It had been a smooth trip to the ferry, but once I was on the boat, I began to feel uneasy again. I was out in the open. How was I going to feel safe anywhere if I couldn’t be safe in the home that my parents built with so much love?
