Chapter 39: On the Run

I felt my blood freeze when a shot rang out and Jack stumbled forward. He kept his hold on the chair he was using to shield us, but I saw a dark patch begin to form on his shoulder.
I gasped in horror. “Jack!” Like an idiot, I reached out to him.
His head whipped toward me, his face twisted in pain. His eyes flashed and he gritted his teeth together hard.
“Go!” he barked. He wrapped his good arm around me and yanked me toward the door. I stumbled, but somehow stayed upright as we burst through the side door and into the pouring rain.
Men were yelling and barking orders behind us. I heard loud, heavy footsteps running after us but neither of us looked back. I squinted into the blackness ahead of us, searching for Jack’s car, but I couldn’t make out anything due to the dark and the heavy rain.
