Thirteen Modesty

After arriving in Japan, I became a high school student named Kamiyagawa. Looking around—
Hanako crouched in the bathroom, waiting for someone to knock on the door; the Split-Mouth Woman wandered the streets with scissors in hand; Miss Mary's deathly calls echoed incessantly; the wails and barks in Inunaki Village never ceased; the Ubume searched for her long-dead child; the Aoandon smiled, enticing passersby to play with the lanterns of a hundred demons…
In a crumbling world rampant with sinister tales and malevolent spirits, Kamiyagawa set a small goal for himself:
"Defeat all the demons and monsters, and become the supreme ruler of ghosts and deities."

At the front of the train, there sat a mechanical monkey with cymbals in its hands.


The mechanical monkey clapped its hands together, striking the cymbals and producing a huge noise.


Something like a loudspeaker must have been installed inside the monkey, for a voice came from its belly, "The little train has now arrived at the station, please board and take your seats, this train will take you to, death!"


The monkey's "speech" had the same high-pitched, comical tone as the one Kamiyagawa had just heard over the loudspeaker.


Kamiyagawa stood on the platform, stroking his chin thoughtfully.


He was debating whether it would be better to board the train or to have Mary simply slice open the locomotive with her sword.


Before Kamiyagawa could make up his mind, the golden bell inside the Mirage Pouch started ringing on its own.


The little Fukujin was requesting to appear.
