Thirteen Modesty

After arriving in Japan, I became a high school student named Kamiyagawa. Looking around—
Hanako crouched in the bathroom, waiting for someone to knock on the door; the Split-Mouth Woman wandered the streets with scissors in hand; Miss Mary's deathly calls echoed incessantly; the wails and barks in Inunaki Village never ceased; the Ubume searched for her long-dead child; the Aoandon smiled, enticing passersby to play with the lanterns of a hundred demons…
In a crumbling world rampant with sinister tales and malevolent spirits, Kamiyagawa set a small goal for himself:
"Defeat all the demons and monsters, and become the supreme ruler of ghosts and deities."

Upon detecting the presence of living humans, the two delighted spirits both cried and laughed, rushing over with extreme enthusiasm.


Kamiyagawa had no weapons in hand at the time and he only slightly stepped back half a step when facing the aggressive approach of the two headless high school students. His movement, however, seemed to excite the delighted spirits even more; they probably thought their prey had chickened out and wanted to escape.


What the headless novice monsters didn't know was that if humans were to retreat with the intention of escaping, they would first step sideways with their right foot.


But Kamiyagawa stepped backwards with his left foot and crouched, signaling that he was gathering strength.


A fresh surge of power bloomed in his liver, swiftly flowing through his meridians and gathering in the palm of Kamiyagawa's right hand.
