21: Unforeseen

In the adjoining room,

The room glowed under the warm light but the air between them was frozen in time, icy.

Mehar didn't know where to go from here. They agreed to wait it out till next morning, so the plan was to wait it out, but as they stood face to face on either sides of a bed things were starting to turn pretty awkward. She turned to her right and approached the chair at the foot of the bed, intending to sit there for the time being and found that Balthazar followed her there.

"What now?" she asked.

"I didn't follow you here, I just thought I'd sit in the chair," Balthazar claimed, although his eyes said otherwise, "Didn't know you'd think of doing the same." he concluded.

Mehar had moved back to the bed before he finished and she looked up to see that Balthazar was now again by the other side. She said nothing but sat down with her back against the head rest, and he walked back to the chair.

She looked at the ceiling, the lampshades and the fuzzy carpet on the floor, everywhere but him. Because she could feel his gaze on her. He wasn't looking anywhere but her. Mehar wanted to know what to expect before meeting his gaze, she would keep from doing it till she knew.

She could see him rest his head on one hand and then the other, from the corner of her eye, she could see him studying her. He couldn't be trusted for even a moment so she made note of everything he was doing but meeting his eyes wasn't part of the job description, and so she wouldn't have to, she decided.

Balthazar looked at her avoiding his eyes at all cost. She granted her eyes to everything in the room but him but he knew where her attention was. It would've been amusing if she wasn't as deadly.

Mehar wondered knew he was playing around, the intense staring is something he tried to pull on her three years ago and here he is doing it again. She wasn't going to tonight, he could try all he wanted.

A shadow fell on her and she looked up, at Balthazar blocking the light and grinning at her. She stood up to match, and raised her eyebrows in a question. He shook his head and took a step forward. She took a step forward too, holding her ground.

Her eyes were just a beat away from his lips, their breaths mingled. She noticed how soft his lips looked, and how oddly punchable.

Neither could take a step back, they were waiting for the other to admit defeat and neither could move, as they didn't couldn't even fathom where things would go from there. So they stood haughtily as the air between them grew warmer.

Something shattered through the window and they were both on their stomachs in a minute. Amidst the shattered crystals that littered the floor rolled a bullet. Their eyes met and the message was received loud and clear- they had to get out of here, and now!
