I can't remove my eyes from the body of the dead girl.
She is leaning on the toilet and the floor is covered with the blood coming from her left wrist. On her right hand, she is holding a cutter. Did she commit suicide?
"This is because of the hate notes she received and the photoshopped picture of her body being fat online!" a girl said.
I turned to look at her, I can remember her face because she's also a member of a cheerleading squad like William's girlfriend.
"She often received a note on her locker saying that she might explode because of her body figure. Two days ago, someone posted a photoshopped picture of her body being fat. She probably got depressed about that post and the fat shaming notes she received so she decided to kill herself."
"This is a suicide..."
Everyone got silent as they felt pity towards the girl, but the silence was cracked when another girl entered the restroom.
"This is not a suicide, someone murdered her," she said.
I blink and turn to look at the person who speaks.
"Natasha."
I knew her. I've seen her many times at the library reading alone. If I remember it right, she is a member of the detective club in this school. I forgot what their club name is.
She's here now to solve the case and prove that what happened to the girl is not a suicide.
I got chills thinking that someone had murdered the girl.
"What do you mean?" the girl who said that it was a suicide asked.
"Bernadette Huston, 17 years old. A member of the school's cheerleading squad. This is obviously a murder case because the culprit made a wrong move. Bernadette is one of my classmates so I know that she's left handed. If she's going to cut her wrist, then she would've done it on her right wrist. But look, her left wrist is the one that's bleeding, right? That only means she is not the one who made that cut. Someone killed her and tried to make it look like she comitted a suicide."
My jaw dropped on the floor when I just realized that. Bernadette is indeed a left handed. I knew that because she always held William's camera in her left hand.
Natasha walks towards the corpse and cupped something on her uniform's pocket. She found Bernadette's phone.
The phone doesn't need any password to open it so she immediately read the messages on the girl's phone to investigate.
"Your girlfriend texted you, William, but why didn't you reply to her?"
My body got frozen when I heard Natasha calling William's name.
I slowly looked behind me and almost fell down when I saw William's serious face looking at the girl.
Why am I so surprised? I already know that he's at the canteen because I've seen him earlier and his girlfriend is the one who died so he'll probably be present here.
"I didn't get to reply to her because we did something inside the photography club earlier. I just read her message when we finished and she told me she's going to the school's canteen so I immediately went there." William explained.
"Did the two of you meet?"
"No, we didn't. I assumed that she already went back to her classroom so I didn't look for her and just ordered food to—" he suddenly stopped talking when he realized something and looked at Natasha with his crumpled forehead.
"Wait, why does it seem like you're interrogating me now? Do you think I'm the one who killed her?" he asked.
Natasha smirked.
"Who knows? Not because you are her boyfriend doesn't mean you can't be the suspect."
William clenched his fist and ready himself to punch the girl, but before he could even do it, I stepped forward to speak up.
"It seems that the girl died 25 minutes ago. William was at the photography club at that time with me so he can't be the murderer. I'm sure of that." I said.
Natasha stares at me—probably guessing if I'm telling the truth or not. She looked at me from head to toe before she said that she believed what I said and went outside the cubicle to study the entire restroom.
There are four cubicles inside the women's restroom. She asked the girl who first saw the body and the girl answered that after she went outside the second cubicle, she noticed blood coming out from the third cubicle—which is where Bernadette got murdered. She got a weird feeling about the blood so she entered cubicle 2 again and stepped on the toilet bowl to look at it from above, and she ran outside in horror when she saw a dead body there.
Two other girls confessed that they went to the women's restroom earlier—before the time Bernadette got murdered.
"There wasn't actually a vacant cubicle when I entered the restroom so I waited for one of them to go outside before I got to enter the cubicle 2." the girl who founded the body said.
"There are only 4 cubicles so let's say that you're girl number 5." Natasha speaks.
She asked the two other girls who entered the restroom what cubicle they were in.
The girl named Fiona was in cubicle 1.
Francine was in cubicle 2 (she's the one who finished first so the girl who found the body—Stella, entered that cubicle after her.)
The dead girl, Bernadette is inside cubicle 3...
But who is the girl that was inside cubicle 4 at that time?
"The girl in cubicle 4 might have left the canteen now." the girl beside me guessed.
"No, that person is still here." Natasha said confidently.
She entered the third cubicle again and looked at Bernadette's corpse before she examined something in her hands.
Bernadette has long nails. Natasha held her hand using a handkerchief and looked closely at her fingers before she went outside the cubicle and roamed her eyes among the students, and then she smiled.
A smile that tells that she already knew who the culprit is.
"I already know who's the culprit." she said, making everyone surprised while looking at her—and that includes me.
"Who?"
Natasha walks towards the guy wearing a varsity jacket and starts to ask him a question.
"I remember you, you are the new transferee guy who just joined the varsity team six months ago, right?"
"Yeah," the guy answered.
"Did you go to the men's bathroom earlier?" she asked another question.
"I did. I had an upset stomach earlier."
"Why did you bring your bag to the cubicle?"
The guy is currently holding his bag and some parts of the bag are stained wet so she guessed that he brought that bag to the men's restroom earlier.
"I don't want to leave it to someone." the guy answered.
Looks like he doesn't have any friends that he could trusted inside this school like me. But I wonder why he is still wearing his varsity jacket? The weather today is very hot. There is no game today so why is he wearing that?
"You're lying. you didn't have an upset stomach. Before you go to the men's restroom, you follow Bernadette here at the women's restroom, am I right?"
The guy's forehead crumpled and those who heard Natasha's question also wondered.
"What do you mean?"
"You're the one who killed her," said Natasha.
Everyone was shocked.
"I don't know what you're saying." the guy denied.
"It's you who killed her. With your strong hands, you can easily kill the girl by choking her."
"I didn't do it! I don't even know her."
"You're lying. She's one of the members of the cheerleading squad so you probably know her."
The guy didn't speak.
"The girl's fingernails are stained with blood. That means, she left a scratch on the skin of the culprit while the culprit is choking her. The murderer choked her to death and use a cutter to cut a deep wound on her wrist to make it look like she committed suicide.
You are wearing that varsity jacket because you have something to hide, right? The weather is hot today so why don't you remove it in front of us now?"
The guy didn't move to remove the jacket and just remained silent. He doesn't have any plan to do it so William grabbed the guy and forcibly removed the jacket on him.
Inaudible whispers of the students began as we saw that there were really scratches on his arms that he got while killing Bernadette.
"It's true that you entered the men's restroom, but it's not because you have an upset stomach. You go there with your bag, lock the door and let the music on your phone play so the people who would enter the restroom would think that there's someone inside that cubicle... then you followed Bernadette to the women's restroom and killed her. After killing the girl, you locked her cubicle and climbed up the door to leave the restroom, but you heard someone coming so you entered the fourth cubicle and hid there. The reason why there's no vacant cubicle when Stella entered the restroom.
You waited for everyone to finish before you left. But you don't know that Stella was still inside the cubicle 2.
After you left this restroom, you go to the men's bathroom again, stop the music on your phone and wear your jacket to hide the evidence, am I right, Mr. Quintanilla? You don't need to deny it because the police will soon come here to get her corpse and after they examine her body, your fingerprints will be found."
When the guy looked down he immediately received a punch from William. William didn't stop punching the guy so I pulled him away to stop him. He might have killed the guy if I didn't stop him from punching him.
"That girl is horrible. She's the reason why my sister is dead. My sister killed herself because of that Bernadette!"
"Sister?"
Nobody knew about it so all of us were shocked… except Natasha who seemed to know what he's talking about.
"Yeah, Emma Quintanilla. She used to study at this school before she committed suicide because of that girl. You don't know how terrified I was when I saw my sister on her room's bathroom dead. The reason why I transferred to this school and joined the varsity team is to find the one who forced my sister to commit suicide… and it's that girl. I can never forgive her. She told Emma that she can't join the cheerleading squad because my sister is too fat. Because of her cruel words, my sister didn't eat my cooking anymore. She always said that she's not hungry even though she didn't eat anything. One night, I saw my sister crying. She said she was frustrated because the guy she likes and the girl she hated got together. Yes, my sister likes you, William... But she thought you will never like her because the person you are dating is prettier and sexier than her. It hurts me so much to hear my sister saying those words. That's the reason why I want that girl to experience the same way…"
He wrote hate notes towards Bernadette and put them inside her locker. He's also the one who posted the photoshopped photo of Bernadette online.
This is why you shouldn't do fat shaming. Making fun of someone's figures and features is never right.
I understand why the guy is mad at Bernadette, but I don't understand why he needed to repeat what Bernadette did to his sister and killed her.
The case is now closed, and all we could hear right now is his broken voice, while crying and breaking down on the floor.
