Chapter 26

KRISTIN

Edith cooked and cleaned.

Helplessly, I was left to watch her from the kitchen doorway. From the back, her black gown tightly clung to her hips, outlining her curves.

Once in a while, I would go in and look around, eager to lend a helping hand but she had everything completely under control.

When I saw her cutting a large chunk of meat, I cleared my throat, "I feel so bad stressing you out like this."

She laughed but didn't look back. "You are so funny, Kristin. An excavator can't get me out of this kitchen. And before you ask, no, I don't need your help."

I sighed. "I guess I'll just stay here and be useless then."

"Nah, you're not useless here. I appreciate your company."
