CHAPTER 14: REMEMBER THAT TIME WHEN I PULLED YOU OVER?

Years before Darcy – and Bella – took off on their run from Dominic and his dark operation, she might have died in a car crash.

On a wintry early evening between Thanksgiving and Christmas – a Saturday afternoon turning to night – on northbound I-75 near the Oakland Mall in Suburban Detroit, she missed her exit. Or, at least, she ALMOST missed her exit.

At the very last minute, with an abrupt ‘oh shit,’ and a quick but mostly useless glance in her rear-view and side mirrors, Darcy swung her Toyota Camry cross three lanes of traffic to nail the targeted exit despite a flurry of honking horns and – most likely – profane gestures directed her way.
