Chapter 28: A Christmas Surprise

Christmas day was filled with gentle leisure. Unlike the night before, Daphne was able to dress down her wardrobe and slip into something far more comfortable. She opted for a dark red sweater dress and black flats, while pinning her hair back from her face.

Right before she joined everyone in the living room, Daphne snuck off to the kitchens where she gathered the staff and personally thanked all of them for their help in making the Blackwood gala happen.

Many of them were slightly shocked to be given such praise but Daphne was simply not someone who would overlook recognition, especially when it’s deserved.

Afterwards, she snuck back to join Alistair and his sisters around the fireplace. Evelyn was, once again, nowhere to be found.

Her stomach knotted in guilt. It pained her to think that she was the reason why these people were not in the company of their own mother. And on Christmas of all days!
