11. Shooting Down the Crescent Moon (Part 6)

A future that can be chosen and anticipated is the only real future.

For most people, this is self-evident. It is precisely because they can plan for the future one year, ten years down the line, and envision a "future where good things can happen" that they can welcome tomorrow without worry.

But in Li Lin's view, that is purely because their lifespans and foresight are so limited that they have no other choice.

Choose, anticipate, and then what? What comes after? A tomorrow better than today?

Absolutely impossible.

The future is a most merciless thing.

Because it is unknown and shrouded in chaos, it can be freely imagined and painted, just like the statues in a temple. Since a statue neither speaks nor moves, people can project their wishes and aspirations onto it as they please. But a statue remains just a statue; it will not perform any miracles to respond to the sincerity of those prayers, no matter their intensity. The future is no different.
