Possibility is something uncertain and unobservable, akin to the box bestowed upon a woman by the gods in ancient mythology. Before the box is opened, hope and disaster coexist, and until the moment the box is finally opened and observed, no one can know whether it holds hope or disaster.

In ancient mythology, myriad disasters flew out after the box was opened, but hope was left behind in the end. However, the box that Roland and his companions must open almost certainly points to disaster.
